Pugh’s pair of first half goals carries Campbellsville to 2-0 Senior Day victory

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – On a day where Campbellsville University men's soccer seniors were recognized on their final home game, a freshman came through for the scoring as the Tigers earned a 2-0 victory over Cumberland University Saturday evening at Finley Stadium.

Connor Pugh scored two goals, his fifth and sixth of the season, early and late in the first half to help Campbellsville jump out to the eventual final of 2-0 against the Phoenix.

Both goals came off of turnovers in Cumberland's own defensive end as Gustav Oskarsson got the first takeaway, to slide a ball to Pugh who eventually beat the keeper through his legs for the 5th minute goal. Then Pugh got his own steal, pushed the ball up the right side to finish with a nice shot to the far post in the 44th minute.

Overall in the game, there was a slight possession advantage for Cumberland as they finished with more shots than the Tigers but there was only one shot recorded by the Phoenix that went on net. In total, the Phoenix only forced Owen Stott to make one save on 13 shot attempts as the Campbellsville defense held tight for a majority of the 90 minutes.

As the game wore on, the game got a little chippy with a few moments of pushing and shoving in the second half, including a moment after the final horn sounded after Oskarsson was knocked to the ground on a late corner kick, took offense but cooler head prevailed.

At the end of the game, the Tigers had a significant number of fouls in the game, finishing with 16 fouls to only seven for Cumberland University.

Campbellsville men's soccer will now wait for official word from the Mid-South Conference for conference tournament seeding as it looks like the Tigers will finish as fourth seed to play next Saturday, Nov. 9 in the 2:30 p.m. ET game.
