Faulkner scores 24 and Pritchett scores career-high 19 in 70-67 win over No. 8 Westmont

JACKSON, Tenn. — A 9-4 run to end the third quarter sparked the second-ranked Campbellsville University Lady Tigers into a 70-67 win over No. 8 Westmont College on Saturday afternoon at the NAIA Invitational.

Not thinking she would play today after an injury on Friday against MidAmerica Nazarene, Madison Faulkner played and she came out with a fire to her game. The senior from Horse Cave, Ky. pitched in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead all players for a double-double.

Playing in her home state of Tennessee, Courtney Pritchett set a new career-high with 19 points. The redshirt-freshman finished 6-of-9 from the floor, 7-of-8 from the free throw line, had eight rebounds and four assists.

The win gives the Lady Tigers a perfect 2-0 record in the NAIA Invitational at Oman Arena – which is the first time CU has swept the toughest competition in the early-season Classic since the inception. CU is now 11-0 on the year overall and with the first regular season NAIA poll being released next week, the Lady Tigers are expected to jump to No. 1 in the rankings.

The scoring started for Pritchett getting the first two buckets of the day and Campbellsville led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. Ashlee McGeorge gave the Lady Tigers their first double figure lead of the day at the 4:19 mark in the second quarter, 26-15, but a mini run for the Warriors cut the lead to only eight, 32-24 at halftime.

The third quarter was the difference – for both squads. Pritchett started it with a pair of old fashioned 3-point plays giving the Lady Tigers an 11-point advantage, 42-31.

No. 8 Westmont would then find its groove. A 13-0 run capped by a Maud Ranger 3-pointer gave the Warriors their first lead, 44-42, at the 3:11 mark of the frame.

But it wouldn't last long because Pritchett would hit two of her seven free throws to five the Lady Tigers the lead right back, 48-46. Campbellsville didn't trail the rest of the way. At the end of the third quarter it was Caitlin Hall sparking CU with a driving layup to put CU ahead by five, 51-46.

Campbellsville weathered the cooling storm to start the fourth frame but picked up its defense. CU didn't score for over three minutes and the Warriors were able to cut the lead to two, 57-55. Faulkner put CU ahead 59-57 with two free throws and then scored the first field goal for over five minutes with a fancy spin move with 3:13 left giving CU a 62-60 advantage.

The proverbial dagger came from Lexi Lake. The sophomore sharp shooter hit a 3-pointer – just the second of the day for CU – and CU's lead went to five, 65-60.

CU's defense stepped up and Westmont didn't score for almost four minutes until an Iree Jarrett 3-pointer at the 32-second mark - but it was too late for the Warriors.

Westmont had one more opportunity, but Savannah Gregory sealed the victory with a steal as time expired.

Campbellsville will now have a week to prepare for Mid-South Conference play as the Lady Tigers travel to Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
