CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Friday evening, the Tigers dropped the first game of the MSC/SSAC Challenge after Dalton State's buzzer beating game winner.
The Tigers came out firing tonight as they quickly built up a 12-point lead on three straight triples from
Jacob King,
David Simmons, and
Taiveyhon Mason, a minute a half into the ballgame.
Throughout the half, CU continued to gap the Roadrunners, building an 18-point lead midway through the period.
However, DSC fought back, bringing the Tiger lead to 11 entering the half time break. King led the way for CU in the half with three triples, totaling nine points in the period.
With six threes in the first half, the Tigers went cold in the second period, only shooting 20%. All the while the Roadrunners offense was clicking as they were able to shoot 66.7% in the second period.
Campbellsville had controlled much of the ballgame, not relinquishing their early lead until Dalton State took a 53-52 advantage with 5:51 to play in the game.
Following this lead change, the Roadrunners and Tigers battled back and forth as six ties and three lead changes took place in the final six minutes.
With the momentum going the way of Dalton State for most of the second half, an intentional on DSC's CJ Perry after
Ronald Taylor attempted an alley-oop to
Lenorris Mincey seemed to swing the energy the CU's favor.
However, as Campbellsville missed three free throws in the final 2:24, the Roadrunners were able retake the lead from the Tigers.
As time wound down, the Tigers had their backs against the wall, trailing by two after a turnover from
Jacob King that sent Kevon Tucker to the line for the 1-and-1. Missing the front end of the free throw opportunities with 10 seconds remaining,
Taiveyhon Mason quickly forced the ball up the court for a reverse layup that tied the game.
With five seconds remaining DSC came out of the timeout and Sean Cranney pushed the ball up the court before stopping on a dime a step inside the three-point line before banking in the game winning bucket.
The Roadrunners were led by Jordan Young, who was able to pick up 13 of his 20 points in the second half. Cranney's buzzer beater also put himself with double digits in the scoring column, totaling 11 on the night.
Jacob King and
David Simmons were the loan Tigers reaching double figures as the two had 14 a piece to end the night.
With the loss, CU falls to 2-1 one the year. Campbellsville will return to action tomorrow as they will face the 14
th ranked Stillman Tigers at 1 p.m. ET in the Powell Athletic Center to conclude the MSC/SSAC Classic.
