Men's basketball falls victim to hot second half for No. 14 Stillman, falls 88-78

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Another slow second half for Campbellsville University men's basketball turned into its second straight loss of the weekend as the 21st-ranked Tigers fell to No. 14 Stillman College, 88-78.

After leading by nine points or more in their second straight game at halftime, the Tigers struggled at the free throw line in the second 20 minutes of play (6-of-15) while Stillman was perfect (11-of-11). Overall, the Stillman Tigers were 2-of-20 from the charity stripe while Campbellsville was 12-of-22 – which was the difference in the game.

Campbellsville (2-2) was led by a pair of Tigers, Taiveyhon Mason and David Simmons with 19 points each and both hitting eight field goals and one 3-pointer. But 13 of the Mason Points and 12 for Simmons all came in the first half. Justin Tucker pitched in 12 points overall as well on 6-of-7 shooting.

But the Tigers couldn't hold down Shemar Johnson for Stillman College (3-0)  as he dropped 32 points on 11-of-20 shooting, hitting three triples and finishing 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

After going back and forth through the first 10 minutes, Campbellsville looked to take total control with a 19-2 run and leading by its first double-digit margin of the day, 36-24, with 5:44 left. Stillman was able to cut the lead to single digits by the halftime break, 46-37.

In the first half, the CU Tigers held Stillman to only 33 percent from the floor and capitalized on 14 second chance points on eight offensive rebounds.

The second half was a different story for CU. Stillman was able to fight its way back and trimmed the lead to two after Trey Petty score two of his 16 points. Then Campbellsville's Lenorris Mincey scored five straight points to extend the lead back to seven, 63-56, with 12:46 left.

But then it was all Stillman in a hurry. The Tigers were sparked by a Johnson dunk at the 12:21 mark and went from seven down to an eight-point advantage with 6:33 left. Johnson scored 10 points in that span.

Stillman was able to push its lead to as large as 11 points with 3:53 left after another Petty jumper. Campbellsville clawed back to wiggle the lead to six after Simmons hit a jumper with 2:33 left but the lead never got any lower.

Stillman hit 56 percent from the floor in the second half and out-rebounded Campbellsville, 23-11, in that span. Overall, CU was out rebounded, 43-35.

Campbellsville gets back in action on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Alice Lloyd College. Matt Payton will have the call on 88.7 The Tiger and the CU Sports Network.
