CAMPBELLVILLE, Ky. – Heading into the halftime break with their first deficit of the 2019-20 season, the Campbellsville University women's basketball team outscored Martin Methodist College 42-23 in the second half to move to 15-0 on their final game of 2019.
The Lady Tigers were led by the career-high 30 points from
Madison Faulkner as she scored 20 points in the second half, 15 of which came in the third quarter where CU outscored the Redhawks 27-15 in that third quarter. Faulkner's 15 in the third equaled the MMC total during the quarter as she went 9-for-18 from the field and 12-for-14 from the free throw line while adding seven rebounds and three steals.
In the decisive third quarter, the two teams traded blows early on but when Campbellsville took a 48-46 lead at the 7:29 mark after a
Lexy Lake three-pointer. Lake and
Caitlin Hall hit two more threes to cap off a 10-0 run to take a 54-46 lead as they finished the quarter outscoring Martin Methodist 15-9 where the closest the Redhawks came was within four points at the 3:17 mark of the quarter.
Lake finished with 12 points on 4-for-10 shooting from distance and Hall had a pair of baskets to finish with five points, but she also tied a career-high with seven rebounds and doled out eight assists, one short of her season high.
Sammy Rogers was the second leading scorer for CU as she came off the bench and added 15 points and nine rebounds along with a steal and a pair of blocks on the defensive end. Rogers went 2-for-3 from deep with one in the first half to help Campbellsville come back from down 40-29 to cut it to 41-39 and another in the fourth quarter to ice the game with 4:47 left to make the score 80-64 Lady Tigers.
That second quarter deficit of 40-29 was the largest deficit Campbellsville has faced all season as the Lady Tigers finished the quarter on an extended 13-3 run cutting the halftime deficit to the slimmest of margins at 43-42.
The Redhawks were led in scoring by Maria Zimdars off the bench as she scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting as she was supported by 13 points from Faith Sherrow and 10 from Caylee McLennan. Savannah Walker also had a strong game on the boards for MMC as she had nine points but pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds with three coming on the offensive glass.
CU women's basketball will get away from the Christmas holiday and be off the court until Mid-South Conference play kicks back up after the new year when they host Cumberland University on Jan. 4 at the Powell Athletic Center.
