WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Monday afternoon, the Tigers closed out their weekend at the Cumberlands Classic with a gritty 71-63 win over Carver College.
Struggling from the field the Tigers rode huge performances from
Taiveyhon Mason and
Ronald Taylor in route to their 10
th win of the 2019 campaign.
After a career high 25 points in yesterday's meeting with Miami-Hamilton, Mason started the game right where he left off with the first five points for CU.
These five aided Mason on his way to almost matching yesterday's performance with 24 of his own this afternoon, with three Edwards Jones triples.
While not expanding his range, Taylor used the old fashioned three play to his advantage recording four and-one opportunities on his way to a 22-point game.
Missing a slew of Tigers due to injuries, these performances, as well as solid play from some role players proved to be crucial for CU.
In the absence on
Justin Tucker and
De'Undra Singleton,
Alston Davis found himself with a new rebounding career high as he played as the big man for the Tigers much of the ballgame. After tying his high in rebounds yesterday with seven, Davis recorded that number in just the first half of play before finishing with nine boards on the day.
After battling injuries since becoming a Tiger last season,
Kevin Kangni put in his first big minutes in the maroon and black, as he was able to knock down a pair of three-point baskets to give the Tigers some momentum throughout the first half of play.
Overall, Campbellsville struggled from the field, shooting just 36.9% and 27.3% from deep in the game. However, the Tiger defense stood firm and limited the Cougars to 32.9% shooting overall.
Despite double-double performances from Johnny Lutula and Jessy Haynes, the big games from the pair of Tiger guards aided CU to an eight-point victory.
CU will look to recover from some injuries this week before a brutal stretch as 2020 Mid-South Conference play begins. The Tigers will be playing four games in eight days to open conference play, starting with Cumberland University in the Powell Athletic Center on Jan. 4
th at 4 p.m. ET.
