LEBANON, Tenn. – In a game that was tied nine times with 14 lead changes, Campbellsville men's basketball took the final lead with 1:07 left in the game and never relinquished it to beat Cumberland University 76-69 Thursday night.
Andrew Smith, who hit the game winning tip-in back when these two teams met on Jan. 10, hit two shots of equal importance late Thursday night.
With the score tied 67-67, Smith hit a hook shot from the right block to give the Tigers a 69-67 lead then forced a turnover as Cumberland's Ty Sean Powell was called for a traveling violation.
With 18 seconds left and the shot clock running out, Smith had the ball about 30 feet away from the basket and threw up a contested shot that swished in to push the lead to 72-67. Smith finished with a double-double at 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The leading scorer for Campbellsville was
Hagen Tyler who dropped 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and perfect 5-of-5 from three-point land. Tyler scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half including a big three at the time giving the Tigers a 67-64 lead with about 2:05 left in the game.
A big difference late was each team's ability to hit free throws as Campbellsville's
Stephaun Adams went 4-for-4 from the line and Cumberland's Shamari Denson missed 3-of-4, one with a chance to give the Phoenix a one-point lead. Adams, the Tiger with the best current free throw percentage, lived up to his numbers going a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe Thursday night.
In his second-straight start for the injured
Jacob King,
Ronald Taylor scored nine points, all on three-pointers in the second half. Taylor hit his threes at times where the Tigers needed buckets, hitting back-to-back threes to take a 32-31 lead early in the second half then tying the score at 48 at about the 10-minute mark.
The 32-31 lead for Campbellsville was their first lead since
Deion Evans scored the first basket of the game with a layup and the foul to go up 3-0. After that the Phoenix went on a 14-2 run to take a 14-5 lead at the time and lead for the rest of the half.
With the win, the Tigers snap a four-game losing streak to move to 3-5 in Mid-South Conference play. They will get rival Lindsey Wilson next on Saturday in Columbia, Ky. before stating a four-game homestand.
