CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville men's basketball earned a big victory Thursday night with an 80-71 win over No. 4 Georgetown at the Powell Athletic Center.
Four CU players scored in double figures behind 22 from
Stephaun Adams and 18 from
Andrew Smith. Adams and Smith led the way for CU with seven in other key categories with Adams recording a game-high seven assists and Smith grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. The seven assists by Adams matched the total assist output from Georgetown in the entire game.
Thursday's game was definitely a game of runs that Campbellsville came out on the better end of, with a 9-0 run at the end of the first half and an 8-0 run early on in the second half. After leading by as much as 18, CU had to endure a run by Georgetown, who went on their own 9-0 run in the middle of the second half to cut the score to only a three-point led for Campbellsville at 54-51.
Campbellsville was able to use the timely three-point shot to hold on to their lead as they hit 10 in the game. Every CU Tiger that stepped on the floor hit a three-point shot led by two apiece from Adams,
Ronald Taylor and
Joan Duran.
Duran had an extremely solid night off the bench for head coach
Brent Vernon, scoring 12 points on 5-for-10 from the field while grabbing four rebounds and adding a block, assists, and steal in the game.
At the end of the game, when Georgetown needed fouls, CU relied on their pair of 88 percent free throw shooters in Adams and
Hagen Tyler. The two guards combined to go 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game.
The defense from Campbellsville held Georgetown to just 23 points on 35.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half. Both teams were guarding well early in the game as neither team hit double digits in points until after the first media timeout in the game when Georgetown got to 11 at the 10:53 mark in the first half.
Campbellsville's win over Georgetown, along with other results around the Mid-South Conference has created a bunch in the conference standings with four teams within two games of each other.
The bunch in the standings will create an interesting final week of the regular season, which starts for CU with senior night next Thursday against Shawnee State at the Powell Athletic Center.
