Whitney homers to spark offense; Talsma pitches gem in game two to give CU an opening day split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — It was a tale of two games for No. 11 Lady Tiger softball as Campbellsville was run-ruled in game one, 8-0, by Warner University and won 4-2 over No. 22 Southeastern University in the night cap.

Warner won the season opener after pelting 11 hits and scored eight runs through three innings – two in each the first and second and a four-spot in the fifth. The Lady Tigers were also only able to muster one hit in the loss – a long single by Ryley Whitney.

Against Southeastern, Campbellsville tallied four hits in the win – two of them by Whitney and another two by freshmen Riley Hurst and Lexi Miller

Whitney led the way offensively with three hits in the two games – including a solo round tripper to spark a four-run Campbellsville fourth inning that was the deciding factor.

Aleigha Talsma was terrific in the circle in game two, tossing a complete-game four-hitter and striking out four. She tossed 97 pitches to earn the win in her debut.

Morgan Gailor didn't have her best stuff but battled throughout game one. She allowed seven earned runs and gave up the 11 hits to the Royals. She tossed 77 pitches in 4.2 innings.

Warner 8, Campbellsville 0
The Royals got the scoring going in the first two innings with a pair of two-spots. It was a pair of two-out hits in the first and another in the second to score three of the four runs.

The biggest inning was a four-spot in the fifth. Gailor sat the Royals down 1-2-3 in the third and fourth but the Royals brought eight batters to the plate and scored four runs.

Payton Blades ended the bleeding in the fifth after throwing only two pitches and Whitney gunning down Megan Garfinkle trying to steal second base for the third out.

Campbellsville 4, Southeastern 2
The Lady Tigers got behind the eight-ball once again as the Fire scored two runs in the second to take an early lead. It was a leadoff solo home run by Kristen Schwartz and an error scored the second run.

But Talsma calmed down nicely. She sat down the next seven batters in a row and the offense finally woke up. Whitney lit up the sky with a moon-shot home run to lead off the fourth and cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

Whitney was followed with a one-out error to allow Ryleigh Oldham to reach and Hannah Judd walked to put runners on first and second. Riley Hurst followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game, 2-2, and then Lexi Miller delivered a pinch-hit double to put CU ahead, 3-2. Blades put the Lady Tigers ahead by the final margin with a sacrifice fly scoring Hurst from third base.
