CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville men's volleyball team won both of their matches Saturday while only dropping a single set against No. 10 St. Andrews and Cincinnati Christian.
The match against the Knights finished 3-1 in favor of the Tigers as they dropped the first set 25-21 then won the next three 25-19, 25-19, and 29-27. CU hit for a better hitting percentage in every set in the match and hit .206 for the match compared to just .045 for SAU.
CU was propelled at the end of the second set by a 4-0 run pushing their lead from 20-18 to 24-18. The third set had a late push for the Tigers as well, scoring four-straight points from 18-16 to 22-16 behind three-straight blocks emphasized by a solo block from
Jason Camacho.
The fourth set was a tight, back-and-forth affair after the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead with Camacho on the serve, recording three aces. After a lead that was as large as seven points at multiple times, the Knights went on a 9-0 run to go from down 12-5 to up 14-12. No lead was greater than two points for the rest of the set until CU eventually won the extended set at 29-27 after Camacho got the final two kills.
The freshman from Orlando, Fla. recorded a match-high 19 kills, which partially contributed to Camacho's naming to the Campbellsville University Invitational's All-Tournament Team. Camacho and
Rafael Cruz were the go-to hitters on the outside for CU as Cruz added 17 kills of his own and a .286 hitting percentage in the match.
The Knights were only able to record 34 total kills as a team compared to 49 for CU, in large part to the defensive effort from Tournament MVP
Joudiel Poveymirow, who recorded 21 digs in the match and 42 total in the three matches over the weekend to earn MVP honors.
In the match against Cincinnati Christian, the Tigers won in a sweep with the set scores finishing at 25-13, 25-16, and 25-19. CU was dominant in their effort with 42 kills compared to just 20 for the Eagles.
Jose Viera Cerame led the Tigers in kills with 11 followed by nine from
Derek Roby, six each from
Noah Henkel and
Tyler Vermilion and four from
Max Stotridge. CU also had two players with double-digit assists as
Jeremy Hernandez recorded 10 in the first set then Camacho subbed in at setter to get 24 assists in the final two sets.
The match was sealed by defensive specialist
Noel Camello slamming home a kill in the third set for match point. The 5-6 junior also added four digs, two assists and a service ace in the match.
Tiger volleyball will hit the road next weekend to play a couple of matching in Marietta, Ga. against Life University on Friday and a rematch against St. Andrews on Saturday.
