Tigers sweep Cincinnati Christian behind season-high 20 aces

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their first match in eight days, CU men's volleyball didn't miss a beat in their 3-0 victory over Cincinnati Christian Wednesday night at the Gosser Gymnasium.

The Tigers were dominant in all phases of the game outscoring the Eagles 51-9 in points earned. Campbellsville scored 29 points on kills, 20 points on aces and an additional two on blocks.

The 20 aces is a season-high for the Tigers, beating their previous high mark when they served for 14 aces on Jan. 25 against Marantha Baptist in the NCCAA Invitational.

CU's leader in both kills and aces in the match was Jeremy Hernandez, the normal starting setter for the Tigers on the season. Campbellsville mixed the lineup up a bit on Wednesday moving Jason Camacho to the setter position and Hernandez played on the outside with seven kills and seven aces.

Hernandez hit for an astounding .545 hitting percentage but it wasn't the highest on the team in the match. Nils Kleinschmidt led the way going 6-for-7 on the attack for an .857 hitting percentage as the middle blockers all hit over .600 on the night with Tyler Vermillion going 4-for-6 (.667) and Noah Henkel going 3-for-4 (.750) as the team hit for a team percentage of .310.

The eight kills recorded by Cincinnati Christian is a season low for an opponent this year, 10 lower than the previous low of 18 by Midway last Tuesday. Combined with their excellent serving and attacking, the Eagles only had 39 attempts on the attack in the match.

As the Tigers are riding a two-match winning streak where they haven't dropped a set, they will hit the road for three-straight matches away from Gosser Gymnasium starting on Saturday against Bluefield College.
