BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Campbellsville men's volleyball team earned their third-straight victory in the Mid-South Conference in a grueling five-set match against Bluefield College. The Tigers trailed two sets to one before rattling off two set wins by the minimum two points to close out the comeback win.
The teams swapped set wins over the first four as the Rams won the first and third by two at 25-23 and 27-25 with the Tigers pulling out sets two and four by scores of 25-21 and 27-25.
The final set looked in doubt for CU with Bluefield jumping out to a 6-2 lead early on but that's when the Tigers turned it on, answering with a 5-0 run themselves to regain the lead at 7-6, forcing BC to call a timeout. The remainder of the set stayed within a point or two until the match was finished by a CU kill by
Rafael Cruz.
Cruz was a dominant force for CU on the attack, leading all players with 22 kills on the day. His 22 kills came on 46 attacks with only four errors for a .391 hitting percentage to also lead the Tiger in that category.
Cruz was backed up by a solid performance by
Jose Viera Cerame, who was the only other CU player with double figure kills at 17. Campbellsville also had
Jason Camacho lead the team in assists for the second-straight match as the freshman recorded 38 assists on the match. Camacho was a kill and two digs away from a triple-double after he finished with nine kills and eight digs.
With the win, the Tigers jump their overall record and Mid-South Conference record over the .500 mark as they now sit at 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference. CU will stay on the road next week with two more matches away from Campbellsville starting Tuesday against Cumberland.
