PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It took until the final game of the regular season for Campbellsville men's basketball to play their first overtime game of the year, as Pikeville came out on top 83-80.
The Tigers had a double-digit lead in the second half before needing some late game heroics to send the game into overtime. CU's largest lead was 11 points with 8:17 left in the game before finding themselves down five with about a minute to play.
That's when
Stephaun Adams came up with clutch buckets, hitting a three-pointer to put the Tigers within two before getting the ball back after a missed one-and-one free throw from UPike's Jayvian Delacruz. Adams came back down the floor and was able to draw a foul, hitting both free throws to send the game into overtime.
Adams almost looked to pull off another single-handed comeback in overtime after the Bears pulled out to an 80-73 lead with 1:16 left on the clock. Adams hit two more free throws and a similar pull-up three pointer with 34 seconds left to get within two points again.
That's where the comeback ended in the extra period though as Pikeville forced a
Joan Duran miss on a layup as the ball went out of bounds off of a Tiger. Delacruz hit both free throws this time to ice the game for the Bears, giving them the No. 2 seed going into the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
Hagen Tyler finished as the game's leading scorer with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting while also grabbing 9 rebounds. In the middle of the game, Tyler passed the 1,900 career points mark on his trek to being the fourth member of the 2,000-point club.
Adams finished with 23 points and six rebounds for his sixth-straight game over the 20-point mark. He did struggle from the field shooting 7-of-19 (36.8%) and 3-of-12 from three-point land.
Ronald Taylor put up his best offensive game of the year, scoring a career-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Taylor combined his 16 points with only holding Delacruz, the Mid-South's leading scorer, to 12 points in the game as Taylor matched up against Delacruz anytime the two were on the floor at the same time.
The Tigers will be seeded fifth going into the conference tournament that will be hosted back in Pikeville starting next week. After the final results of across the conference, it appears that CU will face University of the Cumberlands in the opening round of the tournament as no official seeding has been announced by the conference.
The first round of the conference tournament will begin on Saturday for the men as the women's first round will play on Friday.
