Tigers avenge two regular season losses with MSC Tournament win over Cumberlands

Box Score PIKEVILLE, KY. — Campbellsville avenged two regular-season defeats and bounced the University of the Cumberlands from the 2018-19 Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Championship at the East Kentucky Expo Center, 88-87.

The Tigers (22-8) used 33 points from Stephaun Adams and some late heroics from Jacob King to turn back Cumberlands.

Only four points separated the two teams after three games. In the regular season, Cumberlands, after Campbellsville led by 20 at the halftime, rallied to win 77-76. And, then in the Powell Athletic Center, a foul call with three seconds left resulted in the winning free throws in a 65-64 CU loss.

Not today. Campbellsville constructed a 10-point lead in the first half only to watch it evaporate when Jahi Hinson drained a 3 at the intermission buzzer.

The Tigers and the Patriots traded leads most of the second half, with Cumberlands manufacturing a 65-60 lead near the midway point. But Adams hit four free throws and a layup and the game stayed within five the rest of the way.

Before the frantic ending, Campbellsville was able to push its lead to 86-81 with just under a minute of play. UC's Jordan Griggs hit a 3 and then two-out-of-three free throws that he got when he was fouled behind the arc with about 20 seconds remaining.

With Campbellsville leading 86-85, King hit two free throws for an 88-85 lead. Cumberland's Malik Colvin-Sheldon pulled the Patriots within one, 88-87, with three ticks remaining.

On the inbounds play, CU's Hagen Tyler was tied up. But the Patriots could not get a shot off at the end of the game.

Andrew Smith was a rebound shy of a double-double with 22 points and nine boards. His work on the boards allowed Campbellsville a 31-26 edge in rebounding. King, in his first game back from injury, scored 13 and had one big steal late in the game with the outcome in question.

Joan Duran pitched in seven points and five rebounds in one of his most productive games of the season.

Cumberlands was led by Griggs' 30, and double-figure support from Hinson (24) and Nnamdi Van Dulm (16).

Campbellsville advances to Sunday's five p.m. game against No. 1-Seed Georgetown — an 88-79 winner over Cumberland University earlier today.
