HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Campbellsville baseball go their first win and first loss of the season out of the way on day one as they split Friday's doubleheader against William Carey University. The Tigers won game one 7-2 behind four first inning runs and the Crusaders won game two 2-0.
CU smacked 12 hits in the seven-inning game one behind a three-hit day from catcher
Austin Peterson. Peterson got the season started in exciting fashion as he crushed a three-run home run in the first to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Peterson was the offensive star for the Tigers in game one, going 3-for-4 with the home run and a double.
Campbellsville had already scored a run in the first after
Tyson Solis led off the game with a single then was moved over by a
Marco Murillo sacrifice bunt. That was followed by back-to-back singles by
Adbiel Morales and
Tony Fonzo as Solis scored on the Fonzo single.
The Tigers added two more in the third inning on a
Donnel Bailey two-RBI single, scoring Fonzo and
Lane Kashiwamura, who was courtesy running for Peterson. Bailey, Solis, and Morales each finished the game with two hits as Bailey added the two RBIs, along with Morales and Solis scoring a run.
Starting pitcher,
Tyler Deason earned the win going 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. CU only went to
Jesse Davis out of the bullpen as Davis picked up the save, going 2.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts.
Davis originally entered the game in the fifth inning with the Tigers up 6-2 and runners on second and third with one out. Davis proceeded to get a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam and keep the Tigers on top.
In game two, CU was shut down by Crusaders' starting pitcher JC Sanner for all seven innings. Sanner threw a complete game, striking out seven Tiger batters and only allowing three hits.
Campbellsville didn't get their first hit until the fifth inning when
DePaul Blunt broke up the no-hitter with a single into left field. CU did threaten Sanner in the sixth inning by loading the bases with two outs but were unable to bring anything across the plate as
Ian Nowak struck out.
Tigers' starter
Malcom Grady had a strong outing on the mound as well, giving up only two runs on three hits in five innings with six strikeouts.
Mikey Hooper added a quality inning out of the bullpen with two strikeouts and a hit given up.
CU and William Carey will get back at it tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET. Tomorrow's first game is planned to be a nine-inning game with the second game being another seven-inning game.
