Deason’s big day powers Tigers to 18-7 win over Brescia in seven innings

OWENSBORO, Ky. – It was a hitters' day at Kamuf Park in Owensboro, Ky. Wednesday afternoon as the Campbellsville baseball team beat Brescia University 18-7 behind four home runs. The Tigers won via the 10-run rule as the game was called final after the seventh inning with CU up 11 runs.

One of the four home runs came off the bat of senior Tyler Deason who collected five hits on the day coming up a triple shy of the cycle when it was all said and done. Deason went 5-for-6 with six RBIs in the game, including three RBIs in two at-bats in the very first inning with his two-run home run and an RBI single.

The other home runs came off the bats of Adbiel Morales, Donnel Bailey, and Marco Murillo as all four home runs were the second of the season for each individual. Morales hit a three-run shot in the first to push the lead then to 7-0 in the eight-run CU first, Bailey hit a moonshot to left center in the third inning for a two-run home run, and Murillo blasted a two-run rocket to left in the fifth to give the Tigers a 17-6 lead.

Campbellsville was aided by some defensive miscues from the Bearcats as they committed two errors in the first to keep the inning alive before Morales' three-run home run. On a windy day in Owensboro, fly ball or pop up outs were an adventure as about for our five balls in the air that would normally be routine fell for hits.

Senior Chris Taitague took advantage of an opportunity on Wednesday, getting the start in center field for an ailing Tyson Solis. Taitague only went 1-for-1 in the two-spot in the Tiger order but reached on all five plate appearances drawing two walks and being hit by a pitch twice in the game.

On the mound, Aaron Hutchinson was the CU starting pitcher as the junior went five innings allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits and striking out four on his way to his first win as a Tiger. Logan Davis came on in relief and pitched the final two innings allowing a run on three hits while striking out three. Combined, the two CU pitchers did not walk a Brescia batter on Wednesday.

Campbellsville will have a single day off tomorrow before heading to Grayson, Ky. for a three-game series against Kentucky Christian University. The Knight will head into the series at 3-10 as the Tigers continue hovering about the .500 mark on the season, now at 9-8 after Wednesday's win.
