Recap: Ratliff sits in 44th after slow first day on the Tennessee River at Bassmaster Classic

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Campbellsville's Nick Ratliff was fishing alongside 51 professional anglers on the Tennessee River for Day 1 of the 2019 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK's Sporting Goods and he currently sits in 44thplace. 
 
Ratliff, a senior angler from Vine Grove, Ky., was one fish short of a limit with four keepers weighing in at 6 lbs. 10 oz. The biggest fish of the day was a 2 lb. 10oz. smallmouth that just reached the minimum 18-inches by a centimeter. 
 
The College Series Bracket Champion has some ground to make up on Day 2 of The Classic as the top 25 will make it to Sunday's championship round. The cutline is currently 9 lbs. 4 oz. -- and Ratliff is behind by only 2 lbs. 10 oz. 
 
Knoxville native Ott DeFoe leads the field after Day 1 with 20 pounds even. He also picked up the Berkley Big Bass with six pounds even – which was his first fish of the day early on Friday morning. 
 
In second place is Roy Hawk with 17 lbs. 11 oz. Clifford Pirch is third (16-11), Justin Lucas is fourth (16-7) and Jacob Wheeler is fifth (14-11). 
 
Four-time champ Kevin Vandam currently sits in 20thplace with 10 lbs. 2 oz. Back-to-back champ Jordan Lee didn't have the best day either and sits in 33rdplace with 8 lbs. 6 oz. 

Fellow Kentucky natives Bradley Roy and Matthew Robinson are in 43rdand 49th, respectively. Roy finished just above Ratliff with five ounces more, 6 lbs. 15 oz. Robertson had two fish for 3 lbs. 5 oz. 
 
Day two of The Classic is set for takeoff at 7:40 a.m. ET on the Tennessee River at Calhoun's and Volunteer Landing. 
 
The 2019 Bassmaster Classic Expo is also open to all fans throughout the tournament and is free of charge. In recent years, tackle and lure companies have been using the Classic Expo as the venue to introduce their newest products to bass fishing fans. The 2019 Expo will cover 220,000 square feet across two venues.
 
Arguably, the largest event of its kind in the country, this exhibit of the latest in bass fishing equipment and outdoor gear will be housed in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World's Fair Exhibition Hall, which was newly renovated in the spring of 2018.
 
Once again, weigh-ins will be at University of Tennessee's Thompson Boling Arena starting approximately at 4:15 p.m. ET each day.
