No. 16 Lady Tiger softball returns home for another doubleheader vs. Cumberland Phoenix

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — After another week layover, No. 16 Lady Tiger softball gets back on the diamond Saturday afternoon as Campbellsville hosts Cumberland University for the second straight weekend.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and fans can tune into the CU Sports Network for full coverage at the links above.

The Lady Tigers (14-3, 2-0 MSC) and Phoenix (12-5, 0-2 MSC) are playing for the second straight weekend due to unusual circumstances. The series was originally scheduled for this weekend but due to weather and not being able to find games, the two programs split up the Mid-South Conference opening series in two separate weekends.

In the doubleheader last weekend, the Lady Tigers dominated game one, 15-6, and had to come from behind in game two to win, 8-7.

Hannah Judd named MSC Player of the Week:
  • Judd, a freshman from Greenburg, Ky., led the Lady Tigers to a 4-0 week and extended CU's record to 14-3 on the year and a perfect 2-0 start in Mid-South Conference play.
  • She hit .538 last week (7-for-13), scored six runs, hit three home runs and finished with four RBI. The three homers were the first of her career and the three RBI vs. Cumberland University in a 15-6 win on Saturday was also a game-high for the freshman.
  • Overall on the week, Judd slugged 1.231 at the plate with her three extra base hits (home runs).
Tori Humphrey starting to find grove:
  • For the first time this season, junior All-American Tori Humphrey enters with a hitting streak after coming back from an ACL injury at the end of last season.
  • She went 2-for-3 against Cumberland in game one last Saturday. Humphrey hit a home run, drove in two runs and scored two in the win.
  • In game two, she hit a three-run home run to give the Lady Tigers a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning.
  • Humphrey, an NAIA All-American in 2017 and NFCA All-American in 2018, is hitting .174 on the season with four home runs and 11 RBI.
Freshmen galore:
  • It seems like every few years, coach Shannon Wathen brings in a highly touted freshmen class and that's no different for the 2019 season.
  • Four of the top six hitters in the lineup are rookies, while Lexi Miller leads the way by hitting .415 with 22 hits in 53 at bats.
  • After a slow start, Judd has solidified herself in the lineup. She brings in a seven-game hitting streak and is hitting .571 in that stretch (12-for-21).
  • Riley Hurst leads the Lady Tigers with 17 RBI, including a seven-RBI game vs. Culver Stockton on March 2.
  • In the last six games, Hurst is hitting .473 since the game vs. Culver Stockton (9-for-19).
Pitching staff is seeking consistency:
  • Freshman Aleigha Talsma has led the way in the first 17 games of the season. She's tossed a total of 46.2 innings in nine starts and boasts a 1.80 ERA.
  • Talsma currently owns a 6-1 record and opponents are hitting .246 off the freshman righty.
  • After allowing only three earned runs in the first six games, Talsma has allowed nine in the last three.
  • Morgan Gailor is seeking consistency in the circle after starting her senior season with a 3.57 ERA and 5-2 record. In the 49 innings this year, Gailor has allowed 25 earned runs, struck out 44 and opponents are hitting .266 on the year.
  • Gailor has showed signs of how dominant she can be with three games of eight strike outs to match her career-high.
  • Against Cumberland last weekend, Gailor went four innings, allowed five earned runs and struck out three.
  • Talsma started in game two, went 5.2 innings allowing five earned runs.
  • Karson Williams has been a great addition from the bullpen this season. The sophomore from Bowling Green entered both games last weekend to get the Lady Tigers out of jams.
  • Outside of two appearances, Williams has been spectacular in relief. In 5.1 or the total 8.1 innings, Williams has only allowed two hits and zero runs.
