CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The first senior night in the short history of the Campbellsville men's volleyball program was a night to remember this Tuesday night at the Gosser Gymnasium as the Tigers won over Cumberland University in a 3-0 sweep.
The Tigers won the sets by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-16 after honoring the three-year career of men's volleyball's first senior,
Derek Roby. Roby was on the court the entire match to tie for second highest total of kills with six and was second on the team in digs on defense with four.
With the win on Tuesday night, which was also the Mid-South Conference regular season finale for the Tigers, Campbellsville earned the top spot of the MSC North Division. Their North Division Championship clinches the top seed in the North Division portion of the Mid-South Conference Tournament next weekend in Bowling Green.
Offensively in the match for the Tigers, they hit for a .256 hitting percentage as a team throughout the three sets with a .462 in their clinching third set win. They were led by a solid 13-kill performance from
Rafael Cruz who also added three aces on the serve.
It was also one of the best defensive matches for the Tigers in 2019 as they held Cumberland to 20 kills and a negative hitting percentage at -.052. Campbellsville recorded 29 digs but at the net the blocked 10 attacks, led by six assisted blocks from
Noah Henkel, four assisted blocks from Cruz and three assists and a solo block from
Nils Kleinschmidt.
The rest of the regular season will now be played away from Campbellsville for the Tigers starting this Thursday against Thomas More University. The match against the Saints is a make-up date from back on March 1 when the two teams were supposed to meet in Crestview Hills Ky. but a scheduling conflict in the gym forced the change.
