WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – In a game the Campbellsville University baseball team led on three separate occasions, No. 11 University of the Cumberlands was able to pull off a 10-9 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth to steal the series away from the Tigers.
The walk-off came on a passed ball that got by CU catcher
Brandon Douglas as Marquis Orozco was called safe at the plate on a bang-bang play as the covering
Gage O'Brien swept a tag across just a little too late according to the home plate umpire. Orozco was pinch running at third base after Bryan Benz led off the inning with a double and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.
The three Tiger leads came with a short lived 1-0 lead after the top of the first followed by a lead the was pushed to 7-2 and held from the fourth inning to the seventh inning then the final 9-7 lead in the eighth that was only held for less than a half inning.
Working backwards at the 9-7 lead for Campbellsville, it was achieved after a great at bat from Douglas resulted in a go-ahead 2-run home run to left. Douglas found himself down in the count 0-2 as he fought back to a full count after five fouls balls after two strikes, taking the 11
thpitch of the at bat out to left to give the Tigers the lead.
Right in the next inning, it looked like O'Brien was going to cruise to a 1-2-3 inning after retiring the first two batters but a ground ball off the bat of Orley Arellano went under the glove of
Marco Murillo at third for an error. The very next pitch to Raudy Martinez was belted to left for a game tying two-run home run.
Campbellsville built up a sizeable lead in the middle of the game with back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth to gain a five-run advantage.
Some defensive miscues helped the Tigers get three in the third as they scored on an error made on a fielder's choice play and a wild pitch that was followed by a
Bryson Wallet RBI single.
In the fourth, the big swing came off the bat of
Tyler Deason as he knocked in a pair of runs with two outs to push the lead to 7-2. An earlier run was scored that inning on a ball that was misplayed at third base with the infield drawn in against
Tommy Sepulveda as the bases were loaded.
Deason also started the game on the mound and went 4.1 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He appeared to be cruising through the fifth keeping the score at a five-run margin before he allowed a three-run home run to Bryan Leef that ended the senior's day on the mound in the fifth.
Adbiel Morales continued to swing a hot bat in the leadoff spot as he got the scoring started with a bang in the first at bat of the game, sending a lead off home run over the left field fence as CU took a 1-0 lead one batter into the game.
After the tough loss, the Tigers will move to 4-2 in conference play, tied in the loss column with Cumberlands as they moved to 7-2. If the Tigers and Patriots are tied at the end of regular season play, UC will hold the tiebreaker based on this series win.
Looking ahead, CU will remain on the road for all of the next week with a mid-week road matchup with IU-Southeast followed by another road MSC series at University of Pikeville on Friday and Saturday.
