Tigers finish regular season with win over Lawrence Tech and loss to No. 2 Lourdes University

SYLVANIA, Ohio – A winning streak that started on Feb. 12 came to an end 15 matches later on March 30 as the Tigers won their Saturday morning match against with a 3-1 win over Lawrence Tech but that was followed by a 3-1 loss to the No. 2 team in the NAIA Coaches' Poll Lourdes University.

In their 3-1 win over the Blue Devils, the Tigers didn't have their best hitting day from an offensive standpoint but were able to outhit Lawrence Tech in the match at a .133 hitting percentage compared to a -.074 hitting percentage from the Blue Devils.

Where CU was particularly dominant in the match was on the serve and on the block as they had nine aces compared to just one from Lawrence Tech and the Tigers record 16 total blocks to just seven from the Blue Devils.

Serving, six different Tigers recorded an ace in the match with Jeremy Hernandez leading the way with a match-high three aces. Behind Hernandez, Derek Roby had two aces with Jason Camacho, Rafael Cruz, Joudiel Poveymirow and Noah Henkel all recording a single ace in the match.

At the net, CU recorded a season-high in solo blocks for the second time in three days with six solo blocks Saturday morning. In total, eight Tigers had a hand in at least one block in the match with five of them recording a solo block in the match.

In their second of back-to-back matches on Saturday the No. 2 Gray Wolves won in four sets with the set scores going 25-10 in the first, 25-22 in the third and 25-20 in the fourth for LU with CU getting the second set 25-22.

Despite hitting for a lower hitting percentage in all four sets, the Tigers put up a good fight to hang with one of the top teams in the NAIA. Cruz and Camacho got a bulk of the sets from Hernandez with 40 attacks for Camacho and 38 for Cruz but they didn't cash in on as many attempts as they could have with Camacho finishing at .250 and Cruz at .184 in their hitting percentages.

The middle combination of Henkel and Nils Kleinschmidt got their fair share of block assists with Kleinschmit finishing with four and Henkel at three. Blocking was a big part of the picture for the Tigers again as they led the match in the blocking category at 9-6 over Lourdes.

In the end, the Gray Wolves' attack was too much for Campbellsville as Jeff Lam finished with a match-high 20 kills for LU as they hit for a .311 hitting percentage as a team in the match.

Saturday's play ended the regular season for the Tigers as they will move forward with preparations for the Mid-South Conference Tournament that will begin on Thursday in Bowling Green Ky. at the Ephram White Gym.
