BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A long day of volleyball at Bowling Green High School for the first ever Mid-South Conference tournament ended with the No. 3 seed Campbellsville University winning 3-1 over the No. 6 seed Webber International University.
The Tigers won the first, third and fourth sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-23 to finish off their win. The Warriors did win the second set in a tight 25-22 set to even the match at 1-1 at the time.
CU was better in every statistical category throughout the match as they finished with 47 kills, a .229 hitting percentage, 44 assists, 41 digs and 11 aces. The hitting percentage number was a significant margin as WIU finished just in the positive with a .087 hitting percentage.
Campbellsville had a pair of double-digit kill matches from their top two attackers from the regular season,
Rafael Cruz and
Jason Camacho. Camacho was particularly outstanding for the Tigers with a double-double at a match-high 14 kills along with 11 digs.
Cruz was less efficient on the attack than Camacho but still was able to finish with 12 kills in the match, still more than any Webber International attackers. The Warriors, in fact, had no player in double digits with kills as Liam Gilchrist finished with a team-high nine kills on the night.
The Mid-South Conference's Libero of the Year,
Joudiel Poveymirow was on full display in the match as well, with a match-high 18 digs. The sophomore libero also added four aces to lead the match in that category as well.
With their win, the Tigers will head to the semifinals against Life University, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed. CU lost their only match to the Running Eagles this season when LU swept the Tigers in Marietta, Ga. on Feb. 8.
Life won their opening match against Bluefield in a 3-0 sweep with the sets being won 25-16, 25-13, and 25-17 over the Rams. Alejandro Gonzalez paced the Running Eagles (17-3) with 14 kills. Allain Larroche finished with 33 assists and chipped in with six kills.
That match is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. ET start at Bowling Green High School with the winner moving to the conference finals at 7:00 p.m. CT/8:00 p.m. ET.
