PULASKI, Tenn. – Campbelsville baseball won once and lost once on Tuesday in their doubleheader against Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn. at the Bobby Walker Baseball Field.
The Tigers won game one 6-3 behind a solid start from
Aaron Hutchinson, who went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
CU's offense took advantage of early opportunities, scoring twice in the second and three times in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. That lead would stretch to 6-0 in the fifth on a
Bryson Wallet RBI single for Wallet's only hit of the contest.
Adbiel Morales,
Marco Murillo, and
Chris Taitague finished game one with two hits apiece as Taitague also had one of the five Tiger RBIs in the game.
Brandon Douglas,
Cale Thompson and
Tommy Sepulveda also added RBIs for Campbellsville, all hitting in the lower half of the lineup.
Gage O'Brien had an outstanding relief outing for the Tigers, going 2.1 innings to finish the game for his second save of the season. It was O'Brien's first appearance since he blew a save last Wednesday against Rio Grande, allowing the Red Storm to win game two 4-3.
It looked like the Tigers were going to jump out to an early lead in game two after Morales crushed a leadoff home run to left as CU led 1-0. Wallet and
Austin Peterson looked to have extra base hits later in the inning but Redhawk center fielder Desmond Williams made two spectacular catches crashing into the wall to rob Campbellsville of hits.
Game two starter
Brenden Nipp looked to be starting his day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the first but after a throwing error with two outs, cleanup hitter Rob McMasters hit a two-run home run to right to give MMC a 2-1 lead.
The Redhawks added another unearned run in the second before the Tigers tied the game with a pair of runs in the third. It was two out singles from Taitague and Thompson to drive in runs after it looked like CU was going squander a leadoff double.
The next half inning was just another inning that Nipp couldn't finish, as he hit a batter on a 2-2 count to make it first and second with two outs. That was followed by back-to-back home runs as MMC made the score 7-3 nine pitches later.
Both offenses went a little cold after that with each team scoring just a run for the remainder of the game to finish 8-4 in favor of Martin Methodist.
Campbellsville will get back to conference play over the weekend with the short road trip to Columbia, Ky. to face Lindsey Wilson College for three games starting on Friday.
