CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – With the Mid-South Conference Tournament closing in, the Campbellsville University baseball team will play their final three games of the regular season at home this weekend against Georgetown College.
Both teams of Tigers are within a game of each other in the MSC standings as CU holds the No. 2 position at 11-4 in conference play with Georgetown entering the weekend at 10-5. Both teams also still have a chance to win the conference regular season title, as Campbellsville is 0.5 games back from University of the Cumberlands and Georgetown 1.5 games back.
CU is currently on a four-game winning streak, as they are also winners of nine of their last 11 games after back-to-back conference sweeps over Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson. The most recent conference wins have come behind outstanding pitching performances and timely hitting to be able to move into second place in the conference.
Georgetown is the No. 17 team in the most recent NAIA Coaches' poll and coming off of winning two of three against Pikeville last week. GC has the best team ERA in the Mid-South Conference, led by their top-three starters who are all in the top-four of the conference individual ERA leaders.
Andrew Martinez is in second place at 2.19, followed by Kyle Fieger in third at 2.95 then Bryan Torres is tied for fourth with a 3.16 ERA. Torres is second in the MSC in strikeouts per nine innings at11.57 only trailing CU's
Anthony Arias, who leads the conference at 12 strikeouts per game.
Offensively, Georgetown has the fifth-best team batting average in the MSC with a still respectable .291 team average while averaging almost seven runs per game. GC's best run producer is Shota Usuda who sits at sixth in the conference with 42 RBIs and their most consistent hitter is Ryan Gaynor with a .374 batting average, which is good for fourth-best in the MSC.
Whichever team wins this series will at least clinch a top-two seed in the MSC Tournament next week in Bowling Green, Ky. with a likelihood that these two teams could match up in the opening round next Thursday.
Friday's series opener is slated for a 7:00 p.m. ET first pitch at HIG Field as Campbellsville will also celebrate Senior Day on Saturday prior to the start of the doubleheader that is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. ET first pitch.
