Tigers return home for doubleheader against University of Rio Grande Wednesday afternoon

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville baseball will play their first games at HIG Field in two weeks when they host the University of Rio Grande for a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.

The Tigers are coming off of dropping two of three to University of Pikeville last weekend to move their Mid-South Conference record to 5-4 with three conference series remaining on the schedule.

The final game of the series was a 6-0 shutout in favor of Pikeville where CU struggled at the plate and on the field defensively. They committed four errors in the first two innings to help the Bears take a four-run lead early and the Tigers only managed to put six hits on the board all game.

The Red Storm are 26-14 on the season so far, coming off of a conference series against Asbury University where they also dropped two of three. Rio Grande is just 2-4 in their last six games, all against River States Conference opponents.

Rio Grande is led offensively by freshman infielder Clayton Surrell who will come into the game with a .385 batting average in 39 starts while playing in all 50 games. They don't have the biggest power numbers as a team but outfielder David Rodriguez leads the team with six home runs so far on the season.

The mid-week games will likely cause both teams to go away from their pitchers with high innings counts so the Red Storm could look to Surrell or Caine Whitney who have a higher amount of innings but only a couple of starts between them on the season so far. Surrell has a 3.63 ERA in 22.1 innings and Whitney has a 4.09 ERA in 33 innings.

Campbellsville will hope to start stringing together some wins against teams at the quality Rio Grande combined with winning conference series to help boost their resume towards their goal of an NAIA National Tournament bid.

Looking ahead, the Tigers will remain home for the rest of the week when they host Cumberland University on Friday and Saturday for a single game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
