KINGSPORT, Tenn. –Coming off of a tough loss in their opening game of the NAIA Opening Round, the Campbellsville University baseball team will play the first game of Tuesday's slate in the Kingsport Bracket against Marian University in an elimination game.
The Tigers only led 1-0 shortly during the second inning after a solo home run from
Tony Fonzo in their 5-2 loss against Webber International on Monday as they struggled to hit with runners on base.
The Knights played the first game of the day against Madonna University and held a 6-1 lead going into the seventh and a 6-3 lead into the eighth. Madonna went on to score five runs in the bottom of the eighth to eventually win by a final score of 8-6.
On the mound, CU went with
Tyler Deason to start as the senior went 5.1 innings while throwing 85 pitches. Campbellsville only used one pitcher to get through the remaining 2.2 innings as they went to
Malcom Grady who had a scoreless outing allowing two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Marian got 6.2 innings from their starter Matt Burleton as he allowed three runs on eight hits, walked four, and struck out six. Both relievers Chase Dowell and Ethan Darter only faced a total of nine batters in 1.1 innings and should be available for the Knights on Tuesday.
Both teams left 11 runners on base in their first game of the bracket as MU scored four more runs than the Tigers in each of their respective games. Every batter in the lineup but one for the Knights recorded a hit with the top three in the order of Caden Jones, Tyler Vogel, and Leo Lopez had seven of the team's 12 hits.
Campbellsville's offense had another multi-hit game from
Chris Taitague, who is 9-for-14 in the postseason with three two-hit games and a three-hit game. They also had hits from everyone in the lineup with one exception but they only have one hit with a runner on base and none with runners in scoring position.
Whichever team wins Tuesday morning's game will move on to play another elimination game on Tuesday night against Madonna, who lost their second game of Monday to No. 1 seeded Tennessee Wesleyan.
