CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – All four matches won by the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team had come in sweeps before Saturday's contest against Goshen College.
After the Maple Leafs took the first set of the match 25-21, that meant the Lady Tigers were going to have to do something they hadn't done to this point of the season, win a match where they dropped a set.
That was exactly what CU did as they took the following three sets in somewhat convincing fashion, not allowing GC to score more than 17 point in any of the following sets to take them 25-15, 25-11, and 25-17.
On the attack, Campbellsville was led by
Sutton Mason, who led CU in kills for the second-straight match as she finished the match with an efficient 15 kills on 33 attacks with only one error for a hitting percentage of .424.
She was backed up by a pair of double-doubles from sophomores
Sonia Flendrich and
Paige Merrick as Flendrich used a combination of 11 kills and 11 digs and Merrick set a season-high with 50 assists while also digging out 13 balls on Goshen attacks.
Senior libero
Jaimie Thompson was solid on the back row for Campbellsville as she recorded 30 digs for her season high, coming off of an MSC Defender of the Week honor last week.
Adding depth to the CU attack were sophomore
Stela Velinova and freshman
Sophie Ball as they combined for 17 kills in the match. Velinova was the more efficient of the two as she went 8-for-14 attacking from the middle and Ball sent down nine kills.
The Lady Tigers will get their conference play started next week with their third of three-straight home matches when University of Pikeville comes to Gosser Gymnasium next Tuesday.
