Lady Tigers battle back from down 0-2 for big MSC win over Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Facing a two sets to none deficit against University of the Cumberlands, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team found a way to take the next three sets and defeat the Patriots 3-2 Friday night.

The first three sets could not be any closer as UC took sets one and two by score of 25-23 and 27-25 and were a point away from a sweep at 24-23 in the third before the Lady Tigers rallied for the next three points to continue the match with a 26-24 third set victory.

Finally able to break through in the match, CU rode the momentum of a third set win and a raucous Gosser Gymnasium crowd full of Lady Tiger supporters to take the fourth and fifth sets relatively handily at 25-13 and 15-10.

Starting in the third set, Campbellsville used an impressive service game to find an advantage over the Patriots with six aces in the third, four in the fourth, and another in the fifth. The Lady Tigers finished the match with a huge 13-4 advantage in aces over UC, a major factor in the CU comeback with 11 of the 13 in the final three sets.

Head coach Eric Snyder also made a move of his own prior to the start of the third set as he inserted freshman Man Chin Fung as the team's libero in an attempt to help the team's passing. Fung was key to the Lady Tiger defense with a match-high 19 digs in only three sets played while adding a pair of assists.

The attacking picked up for CU in the final two sets after struggling through the first three with hitting percentage at .156, .060, and .061. Campbellsville finished with attacking percentages of .297 in the fourth set and .206 in the fifth to help finish the match at .144 (64-215) as a team.

For the second-straight match, junior middle Kymbra Kirby finished as the team's leader in kills (14) and hitting percentage (.444) as she was responsible for 18.5 points in the match. She was only outscored by sophomore Sonia Flendrich who finished with 19.5 points in the match with 13 kills, and a match-high five service aces, more than the entire Patriot team.

Kirby and Flendrich needed a little help as the match went on and it came in the form of Sophie Ball who came alive in the second half of Friday's match. 11 of Ball's 12 kills came in the third set as she also finished with a double-double adding 14 digs.

Another vital contributor to the comeback was senior Savannah Moss as the Louisville, Ky. native. also finished the match with a double-double at 10 kills and 18 digs. Moss was also a force on the serve, finishing with three aces, as number of CU runs came with her initiating play.

The Lady Tigers will now head into one of their slowest stretches of the schedule as they won't play again until they face Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. next Tuesday. That will be one of only two matches CU will play in the next 13 days before their final tournament of the regular season on Sept. 27-28.
