CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their first overtime match of the season, the Tigers were unable to pick up a win, holding the Oakland City Mighty Oaks to a 1-1 draw.
Campbellsville came out of the gate firing, shooting eight shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Tigers, however, we unable to get on the board until their seventh shot, in the 16
thminute. After a majority of play took place on the Tigers offensive end of the field,
Connor Grant was able to get the Tigers on the board with his third goal of the season. His goal was pushed in after a throw-in from Azad Illiozer was landed at the foot of
Marc Lawrence, and Lawrence was then able to set up the shot.
Despite outshooting the Mighty Oaks 11-0 in the first half, the Tigers took only a one goal lead into the half.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Tigers looked to extend their lead after they continued to control play. Campbellsville continued to fire shots, but to no avail as many Tiger opportunities were squandered by narrowly missing the target and by a variety of athletic saves from Damiano Risi.
Nonetheless, while Campbellsville dominated play, a crucial misplay on a ball by Grant allowed Oakland City's Luke Simpson to have a breakaway attempt with no one between Simpson and Tiger keeper,
Owen Stott. Stott made an effort to dive at the ball in front of Simpson, but was unsuccessful, allowing Simpson to have an open net goal in the 83
rdminute.
This led the teams to the end of regulation with a 1-1 tie.
Entering overtime, the shot dominance for the Tigers continued. In the overtime period, Campbellsville compiled shot after shot, but Risi and the Mighty Oak defense continued to block and save their opportunities.
The Tigers seemed to have their best overtime opportunities through the 103-minute mark as they were able to put three shots together in a minute of action. This opportunity came as Azad Illiozer looked to possibly give the Tigers the golden goal opportunity, but Risi was able to make his 11
thsave of the night.
Eleder Goikoetxea followed with a rebound, but his shot was blocked by the Mighty Oak defense.
These came as the final shot opportunities for either team as physical play kept the clock rolling to the 110
thminute, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
Campbellsville was able to outshoot Oakland City, 30-6 and 9-2 in overtime, but the attempts were not enough for the Tigers to put more than one goal on the board.
The Tigers will begin the Mid-South Conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday, October 2
nd, as they visit the University of Pikeville at 4 p.m. ET.
