BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Campbellsville University women's volleyball team picked up a win and a loss Friday evening and night at the ONU/Holiday Inn Express Invite hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.
The Lady Tigers won their first match of the day to snap their two-match losing streak as they took down Saint Xavier University in four sets. The match was a close one in all but one set as the scores went 25-21, 25-14, 23-25, and 25-20 for CU.
Sonia Flendrich was the star of the match for Campbellsville as she finished with a match-high 14 kills and a .257 hitting percentage. Flendrich has a good amount of back-up on the attack in the match with
Sutton Mason and
Kymbra Kirby each finishing with eight kills along with
Sophie Ball and
Stela Velinova each having five kills in the match.
Paige Merrick was on top of her game against the Cougars as she finished with a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs along with adding four kills on six attacks for a .667 hitting percentage.
As a team the Lady Tigers were more efficient than in recent matches as they finished with a .327 hitting percentage as a team with their best hitting set coming in the second where they hit for a .609 percentage as a team.
In their second match of the day, CU was taken to the fifth set by Judson University as the Eagles were able to pull off a comeback from down 2-1 in the match and win in the fifth set.
Judson took the first set before dropping sets two and three to CU as the set scores went 25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 25-22, and 16-14. As a team, the Lady Tigers hit for a slightly better percentage than the Eagles at .148 to .146 but JU was significantly better in the fifth set hitting for a percentage of .263 compared to .143 for CU.
For the second-straight match, Flendrich finsihed with the team lead in kills at 11 for the match.
Yelyzaveta Sharkova had a solid match for the Lady Tigers, finishing up the match with nine kills with Mason and Kirby at seven each.
CU will be back on the court tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET with their first match of the day against No. 12 Columbia followed by their final match of the weekend against hosts Olivet Nazarene at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET.
