Lady Tigers split pair of five-set matches in Saturday’s action of ONU Invite

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – After earning both a win and a loss in their two matches on Friday at the ONU/Holiday Inn Express Invite, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team had a tough task ahead of them on Saturday in their second set matches.

Similarly to Friday, the Lady Tigers split their two matches on Saturday to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record. Both matches went the full five sets as their second match on Friday did to make it three-straight five-set matches for Campbellsville.

CU's win came in their second match of the day in a 3-2 win over the hosts Olivet Nazarene. The set scores went 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10 as Campbellsville was able to escape a comeback win from ONU.

Four different attackers for the Lady Tigers finished with double-digit kills led by Sonia Flendrich's 14 in the match. The other three in Sutton Mason, Sophie Ball, Kymbra Kirby all finished with 12 as the next-highest CU kills total was five.

Campbellsville tallied a high dig total as four different Lady Tigers finished with double-digit digs led by 32 from Jaimie Thompson. The dig stat also helped members of the CU roster to record double-doubles as Flendrich had an incredible 28 digs and setter Paige Merrick finished with 44 assists and 12 digs.

In their first match of the day, the Lady Tigers were looking for the upset of the No. 12 team in the NAIA Coaches' Poll in Columbia College. CU got to a 2-1 set lead over the Cougars before they rallied back to take the fourth and fifth sets to win the match.

The set scores went 25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-9, as the Lady Tigers found a way to win sets two and three to take that 2-1 lead. As a team, Columbia ended up giving Campbellsville a lot of points off of attack errors as they almost had as many errors (31) as CU had kills (40).

Three players from the Cougars had 18 or more kills in the match led by 22 from Adrianez Rivera with the pair of Kiersten Anderson and Sidney Branson finishing with 18 each.

Individually for CU, they were led by 13 kills from Mason and 10 from Kirby. The only other Lady Tigers with more than a single kill in the match were Flendrich (7), Yelyzaveta Sharkova (5), and Irene Baroni (3).

Merrick got her second double-double of the tournament with her 24 assists and 11 digs in the match. The only player for Campbellsville to have more digs was Man Chin Fung, who played as the libero in the match.

The Lady Tigers will get back into Mid-South Conference play next week with a pair of MSC matches, first on the road at Thomas More University on Tuesday, Oct. 1 then their return home to the Gosser Gymnasium against Georgetown College on Thursday, Oct. 3.
