CHICAGO, Ill. – After a 13-day layoff, the Tigers were able to come up victorious over St. Xavier on Saturday night.
Campbellsville came out swinging as they outshot St. Xavier 16-5, leading them to a 2-0 victory.
The Tigers controlled most of the match and carried a 1-0 lead for a majority of the night after Azad Illiozer scored his first goal of the 2019 season early in the eighth minute of the match. Illiozer's goal came on a dish from freshman defender,
Greg McIntyre.
After Illiozer's goal, Campbellsville was eager to continue the attack. After having two shots blocked and another one saved by the 15
thminute, the Cougar defense finally settled in and held the Tigers to only two shot attempts for the remainder of the first half.
The Tigers were ready to defend however, as their six first half shots were more than St. Xavier was able to attempt all game.
After a slow start to the second half for both squads, it seemed as though Illiozer's goal would be enough to carry the Tigers to a 1-0 victory. Nonetheless,
Connor Grant put some security into Campbellsville's lead as he picked up his second goal of the year with a header off of a corner kick from
Eleder Goikoetxea in the 80
thminute.
With a 2-0 lead, the Tigers let loose, firing five shots in the matches' final 10 minutes.
This lead held out for the remainder of the match, as the Tigers defense stifled St. Xavier and held them without a shot on goal all game.
Campbellsville will return home on Wednesday, September 11th to matchup against Bluefield College in the latter part of a doubleheader at 8 p.m. ET.
