Tiger volleyball uses big fourth set to beat Quincy, starts 4-0 for first time in history

QUINCY, Ill. — Tiger volleyball continued its opening weekend with another victory, this time a four-set win over Quincy University on Sunday afternoon 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19.

The Tigers (4-0) were led by Mats Radzuweit with 13 kills, while Rafael Cruz had 11 and Yannik Ahr finished with 10.

Jason Camacho tallied the dimes today with 37 assists and only one set-error, while Ahr finished with a double-double tallying 11 digs. John Montalvo led the Tigers with 12 digs overall.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the opening set and never trailed throughout. Leading 15-9 after a Quincy attack error, the Hawks were forced to call a timeout. But it was CU keeping at least a three-point advantage throughout the opening set – capping the win with a Radzuweit kill.

In set two, it was Quincy (1-4) taking a 4-3 lead and never giving it up. The Hawks extended their lead to six points, 14-8, forcing the Tigers to call a timeout. CU answered coach Eric Snyder's call and cut the lead to two points, 14-12, but could never regain the lead or get closer.

In set three, the Tigers started with a 5-0 run and ended up leading 7-1 but the Hawks regained composure with a run themselves – a 9-2 run tying the set at 13-all. Quincy ended up taking a narrow lead, 15-14, but the Tigers answered this time with a 10-4 run to close it.

The fourth set started much like the third, but Campbellsville didn't take its foot off the gas pedal. Leading 8-1, the Tigers kept the pressure on rolling to the 25-15 win.

The Tigers will now have a quick turnaround before heading back north for the NCCAA Invitational hosted at Trinity Christian College on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 24-25. CU plays Judson University, Greensville University and Geneva College in Pool Play action.
