CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Esports team had two titles away from competition as it was a weekend for the Super Smash Bros. players to shine as they competed at a local tournament in Radcliff, Ky. last weekend.
 
In the first tournament of 2020 for the Smash players, they had six individuals in a field of 16 as Darrel Dick, Andrew Edwards, Jeffery Short, Noah Stull, Timothy Terrell, and Caleb Rigsby all took part in the competition.
 
Short was the highest finisher as he took third place in the field, just ahead of the fourth place finish for Edwards and fifth place finish for Dick. Stull and Rigsby tied for seventh place as Terrell finished in ninth place with all CU competitors finishing in the top-10.
 
The characters of Daisy and Wii Fit Trainer were the choices of Short on the way to his third place finish as he premiered his Daisy at the tournament after picking up the character during the past season. Short would use Daisy unless a match went into its third game where he would switch to the Wii Fit Trainer, whom he has more experience with, to attempt to pull out that third game.
 
Stull had a strong second round of the tournament using the character of Lucina as he was able to climb back from disadvantage of 50 percentage hit points to earn a two-stock win.
 
"Since the beginning of the program, the Smash team has seen significant improvements since their first tournament," head coach CJ Moritz said. "With it being our first tournament of 2020, I think the boys did really well."
 
Rocket League was away from competition this week after their NRSL qualification the last two weekends and the League of Legends team earned a forfeit win over Notre Dame due to not enough players being available for UND.
 
The Smash team will attend a regional tournament in February with the date still yet to be determined.
