Lady Tigers make statement with win over No. 1 Life Running Eagles on Senior Night

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A battle between two of the top-ranked teams in NAIA Women's Wrestling battled on Wednesday night and No. 2 Campbellsville pulled the upset over No. 1 Life University in a big way, 33-13.

"The team werstled very well tonight. They made it easy for me to wrestle our seniors." "This team has really matured the last month. They believe now. They are ready to be the best team in the country" said head coach Lee Miracle after todays result.

Life University (13-3) led the dual 3-1 after No. 4 Faye Cherrier won 8-2 over No. 7 McKenzie Bacich at 101 pounds but that was the lone lead the Running Eagles would have all night.

Campbellsville (9-1) won the next two matches and earned bonus points for both. No. 2 McKayla Campbell pinned No. 9 Kataline Bartelt in 1:32 at 109 pounds and No. 8 Charlotte Fowler won via forfeit to put the Lady Tigers ahead 11-3.

At 123 pounds, freshman Adriana Lopez held her own after the first period with third-ranked Julia Vidallon. The match was tied 4-4 after the period break but Vidallon scored four more points to win 8-4.

Then it was four pins in a row – three for Campbellsville and only one for Life. Top-ranked Abby Nette earned the fastest pin of the night (by one second over Campbell) after taking down Aysia Cortez in 1:31.

With the Lady Tigers leading 17-6, Sophia Carson was pinned by No. 3 Alex Enriquez in 2:41 and the Running Eagles got back in the dual by trailing by six points, 17-11.

Then it was all Campbellsville the rest of the way. At 143, Gabrielle Garcia pinned Elizabeth Bound in 2:15 then it was the biggest upset of the night as unranked Alexia Foca pinned No. 9 Destinee Rivera in 4:10. The Foca pin sealed the dual win for the Lady Tigers but they weren't finished.

At 170 pounds, No. 9 Mariah Harris won 3-1 over No. 7 Jordan Nelson and at 191 Alexandra Castillo won 8-1 over No. 3 Gabrielle Hamilton – which was another big upset for CU.

Campbellsville now has a week to prepare for the WCWA National Championship which is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Feb. 7-8 in Atlanta, Georgia.
