CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Following one of their worst shooting games of the season, the Campbellsville University women's basketball team left no doubt from the opening tip on Thursday night on their way to a 78-56 win over University of Pikeville at the Powell Athletic Center.
The Lady Tigers dominated during the opening period owning a 25-4 lead after 10 minutes of play that included 17-2 and 11-2 runs top grow that lead. Both offensive and defensive efforts were firing on all cylinders for one of their best quarters by scoring margin of the 2019-20 season.
CU as they shot 50 percent from the field and turned the Bears over 13 times that led to 18 of the team's 25 in the quarter. Defensively as well for Campbellsville, Pikeville was only able to hit two of their 10 shots from the field and they went 0-for-6 from three-point range.
Savannah Gregory,
Madison Faulkner, and
Lexy Lake combined for 17 of the 25 on 6-of-8 shooting as Faulkner scored four from the free throw line, Lake knocked down 1-of-2 three pointers, and Gregory was aggressive going to the basket finishing the quarter 3-for-4 from the field.
Pikeville finished the half with a strong second quarter to pull back to within 14 at the break trailing 37-23 after 20 minutes. The Bears outscored Campbellsville 19-12 in the quarter and were able to use 12 first half points from Mary Englert to get to the 14-point margin at halftime.
The Lady Tigers went back on the attack in the second half behind a more aggressive
Caitlin Hall as the senior tied a career-high with 18 points, 13 of which came during the second half. Hall shot 7-for-11 overall and 3-for-6 from long range including a third quarter ending three-pointer to put CU up 62-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears finished off the fourth quarter outscoring Campbellsville 21-16 making it so that Pikeville outscored the Lady Tigers in two of the four quarters as the Lady Tigers still went on to win by a 22-point final margin.
Campbellsville women's basketball will get back to the court Saturday afternoon as they will play host to No. 7 Shawnee State at the Powell Athletic Center for a 2 p.m. ET tip.
