CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A pair of wins in Super Smash Bros. competition highlighted the third week of competition for the Campbellsville University Esports team.
Both CU's Varsity and Academy teams for Smash came away with 2-0 victories as the Academy team defeated University of the Cumberlands and the Varsity team earned their win against Randolph College.
Academy was able to pull off the win against the Patriots with the team of
Tucker Harley,
Cody Spalding,
John Luke Roberts, and
Timothy Terrell.
Harley led off the team playing with Palutena as he fell in his initial matchup against the UC opener. Spalding came up next with Samus and was able to bring the Tigers back up a single stock before passing it off to Roberts playing as Young Link as he finished off game one of the match, taking out the final two players for Cumberlands.
In game two, Roberts continued his hot play by leading off and pulled off a nine-stock run to eliminate three of the Cumberlands players before he was eliminated, passing it Spalding as Spalding took two stocks from the final Patriot before he was eliminated. Terrell closed out the game and the match for CU playing as R.O.B. to take the final stock.
The Varsity team's match against Randolph went in a similar fashion but only needing to use two players on their team as
Andrew Edwards and
Jeffery Short carried the workload for CU. In game one, Edwards led off with Robin to take out two Randolph players before Short used Palutena to eliminate the final two players as well.
Game two was a first for the Tigers Smash program as Short was able to lead off and close out the game all on his own for the "perfect game" without losing a single stock. That is the first time a player has won a gauntlet match without losing a stock while taking all 12 stocks away from the opposing team.
CU's Overwatch and Rocket League teams could only pull off one during the week as Overwatch earned a win last Monday against St. Andrews University by a final score of 3-0. Overwatch also dropped matches to Western Kentucky and Old Dominion with Rocket League falling to Eastern Kentucky and Missouri.
The start of the CSL League of Legends schedule was planned for last Saturday but the start was delayed until the following week. Head coach
CJ Moritz is encouraged by how the League of Legends team has looks through their scrims leading up to CSL play.
