CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Esports team had a very busy week from Oct. 19-25 as they had competition every single day except Wednesday from Monday to Sunday in their different titles.
The Tigers' Overwatch squad was most successful throughout the week, going 4-2 in both NACE and Tespa competition on the week. CU earned wins in Overwatch against Brewton-Parker on Monday, Coker on Thursday, Concord on Saturday, and Rogers State later on Saturday with their losses coming on Sunday against Kettering University and Northern Illinois.
The team of
Michael Kendrick,
Reece Brinley,
Zachary Budd,
Damon Schiola, Alexander Rhoton, and
Aaron Burns really found their grove last week as head coach
CJ Moritz assures that they will be the squad competing in the upcoming week's six matches.
Kendrick played as Dva and was able to shoot his bomb through an opening to get a triple kill, allowing his team to push through and get a map win. Brinley, working as Reinhardt, had a game changing ult according to Moritz and was able to use his shatter getting a four-man stun on the enemy team, pushing the Tigers over the edge to get the map and victory overall.
The only other win for CU Esports came in Super Smash Bros. as the Varsity team earned a win over Old Dominion last Friday while the Academy team fell to Missouri.
Varsity's team was the four-player squad of Andrew Edwrds (Robin),
Caleb Spencer (Cloud),
Darrel Dick (Pac-Man), and Jeffrey Short (Palutena) as they were able to sweep their way to a 2-0 victory over ODU. The Academy team was made up of
Timothy Terrell (R.O.B.),
Tucker Harley (Paultena),
Cody Spalding (Samus), and
John Luke Roberts (Young Link and Marth) as they dropped their match to Missouri 2-0.
Early on in the first set, it was a back and forth affair until Short and Spencer were able to clean up the final two members of the Old Dominion squad. Going into the second set, the Tigers executed their plan well and were only needed to use three of their four players to clinch the match win in the second set.
League of Legends finally got underway for Campbellsville this past Saturday as they dropped a pair of matches to Central Florida and George Mason. Moritz saw plenty positives moving forward from his League of Legends teams despite the losses in their first week of action in the 2020-21 season.
League of Legends also splits into a Varsity and Academy team as Varsity is the five-person squad was made up of
Caleb Rigsby,
KeAndre Lee,
Oscar Saucedo,
Jacob Evans, and
James Mattingly with the Academy team consisting of
Micah Abshear,
Jaxon Wheatley,
Garrett Phelps,
Ashton Paiz, and
Matthew Schueller.
Rocket League dropped their pair of matches on Oct. 20 as they fell to Wayland Baptist and Dallas Baptist 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. Both matches had multiple games sent into overtime, but the Tigers weren't able to pull off those victories.
Tiger Esports will continue their busy schedule as they once again will compete every day this week outside of Wednesday in Overwatch, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., and League of Legends.
