CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Esports team got back to work for the 2020-21 season last week as they competed in their first official events of the new school year.
The Tigers competed in Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. in their first week back and struggled a bit, only being able to pick up wins in a Smash head-to-head matchup with West Virginia Tech.
The Smash Bros. format was set to four-on-four crew battle matches as each team would have four individuals with three stock (lives) and each individual would continue to fight until they lose their three stock and a team would be still alive until the last fighter lost all of their stock.
CU competed with Varsity and Academy teams as the Varsity team took the win over the Silver team from WVUT with the team of
Andrew Edwards,
Caleb Spencer,
Jeffery Short, and
Darrel Dick as the team took a clean 2-0 sweep over West Virginia Tech.
Short starred for Campbellsville in both matches as his Palutena was able to finish off the game one win and get the team off to a really good start in game two before Dick closed out the sweep win. Edwards put CU up in game one with strong play as Robin before Spencer had a tough matchup putting up Cloud against a Dark Samus player but was able to keep the team's head above water for Short to earn the win.
The Academy teams for the Tigers went with
Cody Spalding,
Stephanie Capps,
Tucker Harley, and
Timothy Terrell but were unable to come out with a victory against the Gold team from WVUT.
The Rocket League squad for CU wasn't able to come away with victories last Tuesday as they fell to McMurry University and Cornell College both by final scores of 3-0 in the best-of-five format. The trio of
Ronnie Dufour,
Taren Logsdon, and
Samuel Venables weren't able to come away with a victory, but head coach
CJ Moritz likes what he saw out of his Rocket League squad.
"Losing the first two games of the season is hard because they were so close," Moritz said. "It wasn't in our favor but there are positives to take away."
Campbellsville debuted Overwatch this season for the first time as they dropped a pair of best-of-five matches against Northwood University and Blinn College.
Against Blinn, the Tigers fell 3-1 as the team of
Damon Schiola,
Kaden Price,
Reece Brinley,
Aaron Burns, Zachary, Budd, and
Michael Kendrick played well but weren't able to pull through.
Campbellsville Esports will continue on with more NACE (National Association of Collegiate Esports) Fall Cup competition in all three titles this week with more Overwatch on Monday and Thursday, Rocket League on Tuesday, and Super Smash Bros. on Friday.
