WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Looking to break a two-game losing streak in Mid-South Conference play, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team did just that as they earned a 76-75 road win over No. 15 University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday night.
The final minute and change of the game was one close call after another after the Tigers'
Sam Weining hit a pair of free throws to take that one-point lead at 76-75 with 1:17 left. A missed three-pointer from UC's Steven Fitzgerald was grabbed by CU as they proceeded almost take a 10-seconds in the backcourt violation before calling a timeout.
Campbellsville had three-pointer looks from
Taiveyhon Mason and Weining but missed both to keep the game at 76-75 as the Patriots secured the ball with the shot clock turned off. Cumberlands' Tevin Olison missed a three-pointer of his own as the rebound was tipped out of bounds by the Tigers with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.
As the inbounds pass was thrown for an attempted tip-in basket, the ball went over the outstretch hands of Ismiell Etienne without a touch as it was tracked down by Deng Mayot. As Mayot attempted to grab the loose ball and throw up a prayer, he was bumped by Mason forcing the refs to call a foul with 0.3 seconds remaining, sending Mayot to the free throw line for a one-and-one situation.
Heading to the line 1-for-5 from the free-throw line on the night, Mayot missed the front end of the one-and-one with CU's
Alston Davis snagging the game-clinching rebound for the Tiger win.
Mason led the Tigers offensively with his third-straight 20-point game, finishing with a game-high 23 points and eight assists while adding five rebounds in game-high 38 minutes.
Max Reyes and Weining both adding 14 points in supporting efforts as Reyes,
Taj Price,
Jay'von Jackson, and
Devaunte Robinson provided strong efforts off the bench for head coach
Brent Vernon.
Price scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds playing extended minutes with regular starting center
Ross Ryan out for the game and
Lenorris Mincey dealing with foul trouble most of the night. Jackson and Robinson combined to add 11 points and seven rebounds as the pair of wings each played 19 total minutes in the game.
Campbellsville had a strong first half, leading by as many as 15 during the opening 20 minutes and heading into the break with a 13-point lead after a Reyes buzzer beating triple. The Patriots wouldn't go away too easily in the second half led by Jahi Hinson's 20-point performance as he hit a season-high four three-pointers in the game while adding seven rebounds.
The Tigers will now head into Christmas break at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Mid-South Conference play before returning to game action with a home game on Dec. 31 against Cumberland University scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at the Powell Athletic Center.
