PIKEVILLE, Ky. – In a game that was separated by one possession for almost the entire game, the Campbellsville University women's basketball team pulled out an 84-74 victory over University of Pikeville Friday night at the Appalachian Wireless Arena.
The largest lead for either side through the first three quarters was early 5-0 and 7-2 leads for the Lady Tigers in the first 3:26 of the first quarter before the lead changed 11 times with nine ties throughout the remainder of the game.
After UPike erased CU's largest lead of eight points to tie the game at 71-71, Campbellsville took a 73-71 lead at 3:19 and finished the game on a 13-3 run to close out the 84-74 win.
Sophomore point guard
Bailey Pedigo had the best game of her young career against the Bears as she finished with a career-high 14 points and adding a game-high eight assists on 4-of-5 shooting from the field while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Seniors
Sammy Rogers and
Savannah Gregory hit their season averages in points as Rogers scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, 10 of those in the fourth quarter with Gregory finishing two rebounds shy of a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing eight boards.
Depth scoring came in handy for the Lady Tigers as along with Pedigo's 14,
Courtney Pritchett and
Faith Lake adding double figures with 10 each with Lake's 10 coming off the bench.
Sarah Sutton added five points off the bench in limited time with
Lexy Lake and
Madison Sheppard each adding four points.
In the final 3:49 after the score was tied 71-71, Pikeville went 1-for-7 from the field with three of their 12 turnovers in the game coming in the final stretch. Their 10-2 run to climb back to the tie was carried by forward Brianna Burbridge as she scored eight of the 10 points on the run to go from 69-61 CU to that 71-71 tie.
Burbridge did all she could to help the Bears attempt to upset the No. 2 Lady Tigers as she finished with a game-high 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting while adding eight rebounds. Alexis Reed and Mary Englert also dropped double figures as Reed finished with 16 points, 13 in the first half, and Englert added 11.
Campbellsville will have about a week break to celebrate the Christmas holiday before returning to the court the week of New Year's when they will host Cumberland University on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. ET at the Powell Athletic Center.
