Tigers pull away from Cumberland to win 73-65 behind Singleton’s career-high

LEBANON, Tenn.  The Campbellsville University men's basketball team picked up a big road conference win as they defeated Cumberland University 73-65 Saturday evening.

Sophomore forward De'Undra Singleton stole the show as he dropped a career-high 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Singleton also added six rebounds in 20 minutes, filling in for the injured Justin Tucker, as it was only the second game this season that Singleton recorded 20 or more minutes played in a game.

In a back and forth first half which saw 5 lead changes and 7 ties before the Tigers took a two-point lead into the halftime break. Both teams shot over 50% from the floor, hit 14 field goals and 6 three pointers in the opening 20 minutes.

Campbellsville's leading scorer on the season, Taiveyhon Mason didn't play the last 14:30 of the first half after picking up two early fouls. Despite limited action in the first half, Mason was still able to drop 11 points for the Tigers on 4-of-11 shooting while dishing out a team-high five assists.

Fellow guard, Richie Mitchell stepped up in Mason's absence as he led the way with 12 points in the first half and was perfect from the field. Mitchell wasn't far behind Singleton's team-high as he added four in the second half to finish the game with 16 points.

Alston Davis and Ronald Taylor had strong showings in very different ways for Campbellsville on Saturday as Davis added 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting from three-point range and Taylor didn't even score. What Taylor did was grab a team-high seven rebounds and tie Mason's mark of five assists in the game to help Campbellsville in other areas outside of scoring.

The second half saw no drop-off from the Tiger's offense as they hit 14-of-25 (56%) from the field and finished the game shooting 28-of-48 (58.3%). Cumberland's offense was just the opposite as they only hit 9-of-25 (36%) from the field and only hit one triple.

Cumberland's Aaron Ridley scored nine straight points for the Phoenix to give the Tigers a one-point deficit early in the second half, until Sam Weining nailed a triple to give the Tigers a two-point lead with 11:08 remaining in the second half and Campbellsville never looked back.

The Phoenix finished 1-of-12 to finish the game from the field and didn't score the last five minutes of the game, as the Tigers defense finished strong forcing seven second half turnovers, including three in the last two minutes.
Campbellsville will return to action next Thursday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. ET, as the Tigers will travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to face Shawnee State.
