PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – In a game that meant a lot towards Mid-South Conference seeding, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team dropped a tough overtime game by a final of 73-71 to Shawnee State University.
Trailing for about three-fourths of regulation, Campbellsville took a 49-48 lead with 7:34 left in the second half and held a lead until the final minute of the half when the Bears knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 62-62.
CU had another shot to take a late lead at the end of regulation but they suffered a shot clock violation with about three seconds left in the second half as they tried to open up
Alston Davis for a three pointer. After that turnover, SSU had a late attempt to hit a shot but missed that as well to send it to an extra frame.
In the overtime period, Campbellsville went almost three minutes without a point as Shawnee State grew a 69-62 lead to start out. The Tigers got within four points about 30 seconds later but they ran out of time after two late three-pointers made it a 73-71 game but there was only 1.7 seconds left for Shawnee State to just inbound the ball, run out the final second, and win the game.
For the second-straight game, sophomore forward
De'Undra Singleton recorded a career-high as he dropped 19 points while also grabbing a career-high eight rebounds to lead the way for the Tigers offensively.
Ronald Taylor led the game in minutes played, going over the 40-minute mark at 42 in the game while recording his first career double-double after scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds. Taylor had his double-double at the end of regulation after scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the first 40 minutes of the game.
Davis was the third of three Tigers in double figures as Davis went 3-for-5 from three-point territory while adding a pair of free throws and a rebound to his night.
Taiveyhon Mason and
Richie Mitchell struggled in the game as they both scored eight points, combined to shoot 7-for-25 (28.0%), and fouled out of the game in overtime.
As a team, the Tigers struggled from the field throughout the game, finishing at 22-68 (32.4%) overall after shooting 8-for-28 (28.6%) in the first half, 12-of-32 (37.5%) in the second half, and only 2-for-8 (25.0%) in overtime.
The Bears also had three players in double figures led by the 17 points from Tim Biakapia off the bench. Desmond Crosby Jr. ad EJ Onu had 16 and 13 points respectively as the trio of Crosby, Onu, and Biakapia combined for 26 rebounds with Biakapia finishing with a double-double after grabbing 10 boards and Onu added eight blocks in the game.
Campbellsville men's basketball will head to Pikeville, Ky. for a Saturday afternoon meeting with the Bears of University of Pikeville for a 4 p.m. ET tip in the UPike Gym.
