Salazar shoves and the offense comes alive in Saturday sweep over Siena Heights

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Alexander Salazar struck out half the batters he faced and the Tigers offense exploded in their first home doubleheader of the season with big wins over Siena Heights.

Salazar helped CU win 14-0 in game one and the Tigers won game two, 10-1.

Campbellsville 14, Siena Heights 0
Salazar was lights out on the hill, striking out a career-high 14 batters and allowing only two Siena Heights walks. Deshawn Welch tossed the ninth inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The offense came alive on Saturday in the cool weather at HIG Field and it all came from one inning- the fourth. CU scratched 12 runs in the fourth frame and Siena Heights went through three pitchers in the inning before a Cale Thompson fly out ended the rally.

Tommy Sepulveda delivered a sac fly, Abdiel Morales picked up an RBI single, Eddy Artega delivered an RBI single, Thompson also singled in another run before Lane Kashiwamura scored on an error to put CU ahead 5-0 at this point.

Another error scored Grant McQueary and a wild pitch scored Jalen Horton to put CU ahead, 7-0. Sepulveda came back up and picked up a run-scoring double and later scored on a Skylar Vail single giving the Tigers a 10-0 lead. Artega followed suit with a two-run double before the Saints got out of the inning.

That was all Salazar needed on Saturday. The Saints didn't pick up their first hit until the sixth inning and that was an infield hit to the mound. The last hit came in the eighth, but Salazar stranded him at first base.

Offensively, the Tigers were led by three hits each from Vail and Artega, while Thompson, Horton and Cox all tallied two hits.

Campbellsville 10, Siena Heights 1
The offense stayed hot in game two as CU out-hit Siena Heights, 9-4. Tyler Cox went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Artega was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run as well.

Campbellsville scored four runs in the first inning and that was all Gage O'Brien and Hunter McIntosh needed on the mound. O'Brien went five innings and allowed four hits while striking out five. McIntosh went the final two frames and struck out four batters.

The four-run first inning was sparked by a Cox double to center and followed with a Sepulveda two-bagger to left. With CU leading 3-0, Artega reached on an error to score another run.

In the second, Cox picked up another RBI double to put the Tigers ahead, 5-0. Another third-inning run came off a solo homer by Artega giving CU a 6-0 lead.

The fourth inning was the lone time Siena Heights would score a run all day – but it came off an error for CU.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to put the second game out of reach as well.
