Mason and Mitchell lead the way for upset victory over No. 1 Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Not even 48 hours after a big loss at home, Campbellsville University men's basketball turned it around when it mattered for Saturday's contest at No. 1 Georgetown. The Tigers upset the top-ranked team in the NAIA on Saturday, 94-92.

Taiveyhon Mason and Richie Mitchell were both spectacular combining for 63 of the Tigers' 94 points. Mason led the way with a career-high 35 on 12-of-23 shooting, 5-of-8 from deep and hitting all four free throws – two of which were the game-winners with 2.4 seconds on the clock.

Mitchell also tallied a career-high 28 points after hitting five Edward Jones 3-point field goals. Justin Tucket finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

That was the difference today… 3-point shooting. The Tigers in maroon and gray shot nearly 61 percent from deep (14-of-23) while Georgetown only hit 9-of-24. Georgetown also hit only 58 percent from the free throw line (15-of-26) – which proved costly down the stretch.

A clean game that went back and forth, both teams combined for only 12 turnovers (six each) and let their high-powered offenses take over.

Campbellsville (17-12, 7-9 MSC) started on absolute fire and eventually took a 13-point, 30-17, lead, midway through the first half. Leading by three, 17-14, at the 13:45 mark, Campbellsville went on a 13-3 run capped by one of the five 3-pointers by Mason.

But the No. 1 team in the nation is atop for a reason and came right back to cut the lead to only five at halftime, 49-44.

In the second half, it was a knock-down drag-out for the final 20 minutes. Georgetown scored seven of the first nine points and cut the CU lead to one, 51-50. GC ended up take the lead, 57-55, after a Kyran Jones bucket at the 15:07 mark but the lead would never get more than two until Jake Ohmer hit the front-end of a pair of free throws then hit a 3-pointer with 8:51 left to put Georgetown up, 71-65. Jones ended up putting GC ahead, 73-65, on the next possession forcing coach Brent Vernon to call a timeout.

Out of the break, his team answered. Mason scored a bucket then Mitchell banged a 3 forcing a Georgetown timeout and CU trailing, 75-73.

Jones put GC back up by five, 80-75, eventually by four points, 87-83, with just under two minutes left.

The final two minutes were as exciting as it could get… but also a little nerve racking. Neither team had a lead more than two points and Mitchell hit a 3 turning a one-point deficit into a two point lead, 90-88.

Mason put CU ahead, 92-90, but Ohmer came back to hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to tie it up. That setup Mason driving on the other end and being fouled. He hit both free throws and Georgetown's Nico Clareth's last second 3-point attempt missed with time expiring.

Georgetown was led by Ohmer's 25 points and Chris Coffey has 11 rebounds.

Campbellsville hands Georgetown just its second loss of the season as the Tigers are fighting for a playoff berth. CU plays University of the Cumberlands a week from today, Feb. 29, in Williamsburg to complete the regular season.
