WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – As Campbellsville looked to close their season on Saturday, they did so with their second consecutive top 25 upset win, taking down the University of the Cumberlands, 70-65.
While the game did not have any meaning in the MSC final standings, Campbellsville (18-12, 8-8 MSC) was looking for another major win to ride some momentum into the Mid-South Tournament next week.
The Tigers really worked the defensive end of the basketball, limiting the No. 14 Patriots (23-7, 12-4 MSC) to 26.9% from behind the arc, despite entering the game with the fourth highest 3-point field goal percentage in the country at 40.9%.
The Tigers also held UC to 35.9% from the field limiting them to 65 points on the afternoon for their third lowest scoring game this season.
Throughout much of the first half, the Tigers led the Patriots, but were unable to expand their lead past seven.
Both teams struggled from the field through the first half, but 39.4% from CU and seven points from
Richie Mitchell aided CU to a 27-22 lead entering the break.
Out of halftime, the Patriots quickly erased their deposit to tie the ball game at 28 before the teams fought back and forth much of the remainder of the game.
Battling for the lead, the Tigers and Patriots looked to trade blows before UC took their first lead since leading 5-4, on a layup from Caleb Taylor gave the Cumberlands a 35-33 advantage.
Nonetheless, Campbellsville never allowed UC to extend to more than a one possession lead as they responded to every basket put together by the Patriots.
Following a three point basket from Tevin Olison that gave UC the 45-42 margin at 8:04 remaining on the clock,
Richie Mitchell put together his own Edward Jones triple, to tie the game for the tenth time, marking the last time the Patriots led.
As CU established a 10-2 run over the next four minutes, the Tigers were able to take the lead 59-49, the largest margin of the game.
The Patriots tried to battle back, but five points from
David Simmons and another six from Mitchell over the final 2:03 of play allowed CU to hang on for another upset victory.
Following a career day in the upset over then No. 1 Georgetown, Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points on the day, shooting 7-16 from the field.
Taiveyhon Mason and
Justin Tucker also added double digit scoring performances for CU.
As the Cumberlands have proven to limit opponent rebounding throughout the season,
Lenorris Mincey and Tucker did not let that slow their ability to pull down boards, leading CU to 36 rebounds on the day.
While CU was only able to shoot 3-16 from behind their arc, a 42.9% clip from the field along with shooting 13-15 from the line in the second half, the Tigers were able to close out their regular season with another major top 25 win.
