Lady Tigers overcome shooting woes with defensive pressure to clinch 15th MSC Regular Season title

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers were able to clinch their 15th MSC Regular Season Championship with a 67-56 win over the University of the Cumberlands.

Campbellsville (28-2, 14-2 MSC) was able to overcome shooting woes by forcing 34 turnovers in the effort, to outduel the Patriots (19-11, 11-10 MSC) in the final game of the 2019-20 regular season.

Play started slow for the two teams as the Patriots and the Tigers were held to a score of 5-5 midway through the first quarter. While CU was unable to get a shot to fall, their full court pressure was causing consistent turnovers.

However, after trailing 5-1 early, the Lady Tigers put together a 14-0 run to help capture a nine-point advantage after the first quarter. Shooting 7-17 in the period, this was the highest field goal percentage the Lady Tigers were able to capture all afternoon.

Campbellsville continued the pressure throughout the first half as Lexy Lake two-point basket game the Lady Tigers a 25-10 lead, for their largest lead of the half. However, as the half winded down, Patriot leading scorer, Vilma Covane helped surge the Cumberlands to a 14-6 run, narrowing the game to seven at halftime.

Forcing 22 turnovers in the first half, the Lady Tigers continued to apply the full court press into the third quarter, as a seven-point outing in the quarter helped lead CU to a 19-point lead with just seconds remaining in the period.

However, throughout the fourth, the Patriots found the hole in the Lady Tiger defense and were able to begin taking care of the ball, while Campbellsville struggled to find the basket.

After trailing by 17 entering the quarter, the Patriots quickly erased the large deposit with a 16-2 run to bring the Lady Tiger lead to three with five minutes remaining.

Struggling from the field, Sammy Rogers, Madison Faulkner, and Courtney Pritchett were able to work their way to the line over the final five minutes of play as the trio shot a combined 11-12 from the stripe to lead the Lady Tigers to the 67-56 win.

The tandem of Rogers, Faulkner, and Pritchett were able to combine for 47 of the Campbellsville points on the day, as Sammy Rogers led the way with 17.

Along with her 16, Pritchett was able to lead Campbellsville in the rebounding column to record a double-double with 10 rebounds.

As a whole, the Lady Tigers mightily struggled from the field, shooting 0-18 from three and 29% from the field. However, while the Patriots were able to shoot 40.4% on their end of the court, the stifling defense of CU forced 34 turnovers to help seal to victory.

With the win, the Lady Tigers clinched their programs 15th MSC Regular Season Title earning the No. 1 seed in the Mid-South Conference Championship next weekend.

Campbellsville will look to play the winner of the No. 8 and No. 9 seed on March 6th at 1 p.m. CT at Bowling Green High School in Bowling Green, Ky.
