No. 1 Lady Tiger wrestling wins second MSC title in three years with win over Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Top-ranked Campbellsville women's wrestling proved why it's the No. 1 team in the country by going to University of the Cumberlands and beating the Patriots for the fourth time this season, 28-17. The win also earned Campbellsville its second Mid-South Conference regular season title in the last three seasons.

Not wrestling their top grapplers, the Lady Tigers won six of the 10 matches including three of the first four match to set the tone.

Cumberlands did rally with a bonus point victory at 130-pounds to get back within one point, 12-11, but Sophia Carson answered with a tech fall in 90 seconds to put CU ahead for good the rest of the way.

The wins came from No. 2 McKayla Campbell and No. 2 Katlyn Pizzo at 109 and 116 pounds, respectively. Both earned 12-0 tech falls. At 123, Mia Rodriguez picked up an upset win, 7-1, over No. 14 Ashley Tobe to give the Lady Tigers a 12-5 win.

After the pin by Andrea Schlabach at 130 pounds, Carson answered to put the dual score at 16-11. No. 2 Bridgette Duty moved up a weight class to 143 and met her match with Mhina Oseitutu but pulled out the victory late, 16-12.

With the dual score at 17-14 in favor of CU, Alexis Foca and Mariah Harris put it out of reach with a pair of pins. Foca pinned Ismileyna Valles in 4:03 before Harris took down Hailey Budney in 1:14.

In the final match, Alexandra Castillo lost 6-1 to Angela Buenrrostro.

The Lady Tigers win their second MSC title in the three years of being a conference sport. CU won the inaugural championship in 2018.

Campbellsville will now head to Atlanta, Georgia for the WCWA National Championship this weekend at the Cobb County Civic Center. CU is seeking its second championship in three years as well.
