Men's basketball falls in game of runs with UPIKE Bears, 80-72

PIKEVILLE, Ky. —  A game that went back and forth with runs ended as University of Pikeville took the last punch down the stretch beating Campbellsville, 80-72.

UPIKE was on fire overall by hitting 51 percent overall (30-of-59) and the Tigers couldn't find a stop in the final five minutes. The Tigers shot just 37 percent overall while also hitting 30 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Ritchie Mitchell led the Tigers with 14 points, while Ronald Taylor had 13 and Taiveyhon Mason had 11. Mason, the Tigers leading scorer, finished just 3-of-17 from the floor overall.

Pikeville started the game on fire taking a 15-8 lead but then Campbellsville rallied in the middle of the half. The Tigers ended up going on a 17-2 run and took a 25-17 lead after Mason scored the first two points of his day after a steal and layup going coast-to-coast.

The game started to settle towards the end of the half, but Campbellsville went cold in the final three-plus minutes. Leading 30-24 after a Du'Undra Singleton layup with 3:49 left, the Tigers scored only one more field goal the rest of the way – a jumper by Jacob King at the 43 second mark to uncork a 30-30 tie and CU led 32-30 at the break.

The second half started to get chippy and the whistle started going Pikeville's way. After a Mitchell jumper to start the half, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 37-34, not even two minutes into the half.

The Tigers came right back though. Davis hit one of his three Edward Jones 3-point field goals at the 16:26 mark but Campbellsville could never get the stop it needed.

Pikeville's lead ballooned to five in a hurry with a 6-0 run and Campbellsville never was able to regain the lead. Pikeville ended up leading 58-48 with a 17-7 run after the Davis triple at the 16:26 mark.

The Tigers did work the UPIKE advantage down to two points, 68-66, after Mitchell made the back end of two free throws but Pikeville ended the game by doubling up CU with a 12-6 run.

The Bears were led in scoring by Luke Layhew with 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers have a full week to prepare for Lindsey Wilson as the two meet on February 15 in the Powell Athletic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET
