Lady Tigers come up short in 103-101 loss to Shawnee State in double overtime thriller

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Campbellsville University women's basketball team played an instant classic against Shawnee State Thursday night in Portsmouth, Ohio as the Bears pulled off a 103-101 double overtime win.

The game was pulled into overtime after a deep three-pointer made by Lexy Lake with 14.6 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 85-85, where the score would eventually be at the end of regulation.

The Lady Tigers held leads in both overtime periods, including a pair of four-point leads in double overtime, the latest lead a 101-97 lead with just about 90 second remaining in double overtime. From that points on, the Bears finished the period on a 6-0 run capped off by a floater made by Bailey Cummins with four seconds left to take the 103-101 lead.

Cummins finished with a game-high 39 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the field, including shooting 7-for-9 from three-point range. She was backed up by forward Carson Roney who finished with a career-high 23 points as both Roney and Cummins finished with double-doubles, Roney with 10 rebounds and Cummins with 10 assists.

Madison Faulkner was the choice for the Lady Tigers to both attempt to win the game at the end of the first overtime and to tie it at the end of double overtime as both shots didn't fall. Faulkner finished with 17 points on 8-of-24 (33.3%) shooting as she added four rebounds and four assists.

Both Courtney Pritchett and Savannah Gregory scored over 20 points with Pritchett leading the team in points, rebounds and assists after posting a career-high and team-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting while adding seven rebounds and six assists.

Gregory's 22 points was second on the team as she added five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Unfortunately for the redshirt junior, she had to watch the conclusion of the first overtime and all of the second overtime after she committed her fifth foul during the first overtime.

Campbellsville had to play the comeback game in the second half after trailing by nine at halftime as they outscored Shawnee State by five in the third quarter then by four in the fourth after the late three from Lake.

Both teams shot extremely well in the second half as both SSU and CU finished the game over 50 percent shooting including a fourth quarter where the Lady Tigers only missed three shots from the field after going 11-14 (78.6%).

It was a tale of two quarters for the Lady Tigers in the first half as they jumped out in front of Shawnee State during the first quarter, able to shoot over 70 percent and lead 27-23 after 10 minutes of play.

Nine different CU players were able to put in a shot from the field in the quarter, but they weren't able to grow their lead much more than four points at any time with the Bears also shooting over 50 percent in the quarter.

Of the nine that scored for the Lady Tigers, Pritchett was the only one to reach double figures in the first half as she finished with 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field.  Faulkner had a rough shooting percentage after a half at 3-for-11 (27.2%) but added six points with both Caitlin Hall and Gregory producing five points each.

The second half was all Shawnee State as they outscored Campbellsville 23-10 in the period to hold a 46-37 lead heading into halftime. Cummins almost got to her season scoring average in the opening 20 minutes as she had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.

Not normally a good three-point shooting team this season, the Bears hit 4-of-14 from deep behind two from Cummins to hold a slight advantage over CU in that area. Roney and guard Brandie Snow helped Cummins in the scoring department as Roney added 10 points with snow hitting one of the four three-points for SSU on her way to seven points in the first half.
